Non-league: Christchurch boss Cuffie vows to clear out no-shows
FURIOUS manager Michael Cuffie insisted anyone not prepared to warm the bench at Christchurch could find another club after Saturday’s no-shows left him short of options.
Priory face Moneyfields in an FA Vase replay at Hurn Bridge tomorrow (7.45pm) after their 13-man squad emerged from the 120-minute tie in Portsmouth with a 1-1 draw.
Cuffie’s threadbare resources were further stretched by Billy Walker’s first-half injury with new signing Jordan Cotton, himself not fully fit, taking to the field.
And while the Christchurch manager lauded the “absolutely exceptional result” earned by his charges, his mood was tempered by players – who he politely declined to name – pulling out of the squad.
Cuffie told the Daily Echo: “Jordan was not fit but we had to put him out there. It was not ideal and, with the game going to extra-time, he really cramped up.
“We needed players on the bench, but some of those who wanted a guaranteed game went off and it left us really short for an important match.
“It wasn’t me they let down, it was their team-mates, but I expect every player to come in and battle for their shirt.”
On the players’ identities, Cuffie added: “They know who they are and if it happens again they will have to find another club because I will not entertain that scenario.
“It’s up to them. We have a lot of players who want to come on board so anyone who is not up for the challenge will be replaced.”
Walker will miss up to six weeks with ankle ligament damage but Mark Smith and Mark Jamison should return.
