FA Vase: Cup composure key for league success says Arnold
A shock was in the offing at Potterne Park when Jamie Smith handed the Wessex One outfit a 20th-minute lead against the run of play but Jack Lovell's double turned the tide in Town's favour before half-time.
And the Potters plundered the £900 prize money and a place in tomorrow's second round draw when substitute Charlie Gajic wrapped up the victory, finding the net following Nathan Saxby's direct run and cutback.
But with league results elsewhere pushing Verwood down to third bottom, Arnold would now like to see that ruthless streak transferred to their Wessex Premier exploits in the coming weeks.
Arnold told the Daily Echo: “I was really pleased with the first-half performance but they managed to score against the run of play after we had dominated the first 20 minutes.
“That asked a few questions of our boys but they responded perfectly and Jack got two very good goals before half-time.
“Both sides huffed and puffed after that and there was not a great deal of quality on show but we kept plugging away, didn't give them anything silly and killed the game with about 20 minutes to go.
“It was a good, professional performance and we need to take that mentality into our league matches because we have not been playing badly, we just need to show that killer instinct to get the results our performances deserve.”
On his hopes for the second round draw, Arnold added: “It would be nice to avoid the Wessex sides and pit our wits against someone we would not usually come across. Hopefully, we will get a home draw against a club from a different area.”
Potters: Fawcett, Evans, Thoroughgood, Kelly, Murray, Homer (Gajic, 55), Oldring, Webb (Joy, 75), Dyer, Saxby, Lovell.
