Browne hails his Hamworthy cup kings
SIMON Browne hailed his defence as cup kings Hamworthy United secured a 2-0 victory at Cribbs in the FA Vase.
The high-flying Hammers, who have won through three rounds in the FA Cup, continued their recent success thanks to defender Greg Horlock's towering header and Paddy Hester's penalty.
But it was the performance of United's backline which really pleased Browne as he finally witnessed his side's first clean sheet of the season in Bristol.
Hamworthy's manager told the Daily Echo: “Hats off to the lads because we didn't start the game particularly well and we had to withstand a fair bit of pressure during the first half.
“We weren't great but gradually grew into the game and once we got it down and played we created a few chances.
“Stefan Penny hit the crossbar and Nick Tayler had two good chances from corners, but they hit the crossbar as well and we needed to be on our guard.
“But we always felt we would prevail. We were the better side and won the game relatively comfortably in the end. Overall I felt we deserved it.”
The result saw Browne's boys scoop the £800 prize money along with their place in the first round proper.
Elsewhere, 16-year-old Dan Munday's brace ensured Verwood Town's progress in a 3-1 success over league rivals Horndean.
The Potters teen sensation lit the blue touch paper with a goal after 40 seconds, a strike that handed the visitors a slender lead at the interval.
Horndean pulled one back two minutes after the restart but John Webb's 62nd-minute penalty was followed by magic Munday's second 20 minutes from time.
