Browne welcomes competition for places as Legg joins Hammers
MANAGER Simon Browne hailed Hamworthy United’s form as the decisive factor in defender David Legg’s decision to join from Christchurch.
The 25-year-old stopper this week made the surprise switch from Priory following nine successful years at Hurn Bridge.
And Hammers chief Browne lauded Legg’s arrival as high-flying United further increased their competition for places, a situation that the boss admitted was markedly different this time last season.
Browne told the Daily Echo: “Leggy felt he needed a new challenge and it helped that he knew a few of our lads. He’s been around the Wessex for a few years and we were delighted to get him.
“We have enjoyed a strong start to the season and that helps when you’re trying to strengthen the side. We’re in a nice position because players are desperate to play and training has been well atten-ded over the past few weeks.
“It’s much better than last season when we were asking anyone with a pair of boots to play!”
Meanwhile, Christchurch counterpart Michael Cuffie revealed his shock at the move but insisted there was “no animosity” over Legg’s departure.
He said: “We had a long conversation and David felt he needed a change so I wished him well and told him the door would always be open if it didn’t work out.
“We didn’t want to lose him but he has been here a long time, been a great servant to this club and I have only positive things to say about the guy – he just decided the time was right to move on.”
Legg could make his Hammers debut against Follands Sports at the County Ground tomorrow (7.45pm) while midfielder Aaron Stacey returns.
Sam Pekun, Mark Claremont and Dave Sturgess are all carrying knocks.
