FA Cup: Hamworthy's run has boss Browne dreaming of more upsets
BOSS Simon Browne hopes minnows Hamworthy United can continue to defy the FA Cup odds after matching their best run with a 2-1 victory at Hallen.
Paddy Hester put the Hammers in front after just three minutes at Moorhouse Lane but Browne admitted his side came under pressure after the Armadillos had levelled through Ben Bament.
However, Sam Lanahan’s far-post finish settled the tie in the County Ground outfit’s favour eight minutes from time and handed Hammers a place in the second qualifying round for only the third time in their history.
Browne (pictured) told the Daily Echo: “It was a testing game at times, particularly in the second half, but the lads responded after conceding the equaliser because they looked like they would go on to win the game from that point.
“The lads got the ball down and came through with flying colours and they deserve a lot of credit, especially the back four who were magnificent under pressure.
“Our defenders have been much maligned at times this season but once we were in front, they snuffed out everything and looked very composed on the pitch, even if we were a bit worried on the sidelines.”
Conference South clubs enter the competition in the next round and Browne added: “There aren’t many lower-ranked sides left and I noticed there were one or two fans on the Poole and Weymouth message boards that would see Hamworthy at home as a good draw.
“We will go out to give a good account of ourselves whoever we get. There will be other shocks in the FA Cup this season and who knows, maybe we can upset a few more people along the way.”
Hammers: Knights, Biles, Lockyer, Tayler, Horlock, Sturgess, Hester, Lanahan, Pekun, Chudy, Claremont (Penny, 60). Unused subs: Saunders, Bassiriki, Ayling, Shear.
Struggling Bashley snared their first win of the season as Charlie Knight’s brace secured a 2-0 FA Cup success over Moneyfields.
Bash: Collins, Stephenson, Flint, Richardson, Middleton, Roberts (Morris, 67), Casey, Boultwood, Sills, Odam, Knight (Porter, 79). Unused subs: Brookes, Kearn (g/k).
