Poppies sunk by late Newport winner

UNDER-STRENGTH Bournemouth Poppies were left to rue a late mistake in last night’s 1-0 defeat at Newport in Wessex Premier.

Poppies had just 14 players available for the trip to the Isle of Wight and battled manfully on a heavy pitch.

The match seemed destined to end goalless until Ken Vaughan’s men were undone by a quick free-kick from substitute Joe Rayner, setting Port's top scorer Aleks Przespolewski away to snaffle the winner.

Vaughan told the Daily Echo: "We said at half-time to make sure we took care of the quick throws and free-kicks but we switched off on that one occasion and got punished for it."

Poppies: Jones, Akinsuyi, Watt, Ward, Batchelor, Bosch-Mira, Daniels (McRae, 86), Phillipson-Masters, Joyce, Warren, Hales (Turner, 88). Unused sub: Vaughan (g/k).
