Raj cracks 170 but Parley beaten

PARLEY star Raj Naik admitted his team's agonising defeat had taken the gloss off his magnificent innings.

Naik amassed a brutal 170 from 122 deliveries in Parley's high-scoring clash against Compton House in the Dorset Funeral Plan Premier Division on Saturday.

But despite his heroic knock, which included 14 fours and nine sixes, Parley fell eight runs short of Compton House's massive total of 338 for nine.

"I enjoy it when we win," said Naik, who plied his trade in first class cricket for Goa for 12 years.

"It's not an individual game. It's a good achievement but I'd have gone home happy if we'd won."

The 33-year-old felt victory was on the cards while he was at the crease.

He said: "When I got out we had five overs left and needed 38 runs. We had two wickets in hand and I thought if I had stayed in it would have been an easy win, but I got run out."

Saturday's 170 was not Naik's best score, however, as he smashed 178 during his time playing for Winchester.

TREMBATH PRAISED

BROADSTONE skipper Matt Keech played a key role in victory over rivals Poole but preferred to focus on the performance of young star John Trembath.

Trembath, who was called into the side to replace Mitch Wilson, ripped out Poole's top order as they were dismissed for just 141 in the local derby.

He claimed an impressive three for 28 as Poole stuttered on a slow wicket, with just Martin Ford (70 not out) making a major impact.

"John Trembath replaced Mitch Wilson and had a really good game," captain Keech told the Daily Echo.

"He got both openers out and is certainly in the side for next week.

"We've got quite a few youngsters coming through. The third XI is full of young guys so it bodes well."

In reply, Broadstone struggled early on against Ford (two for 28).

But Keech (56) came to the rescue before Sam Chapman (27 not out) guided the reigning champions home by four wickets.

"It was always going to be a hard game, Poole are probably our main games of the season," explained Keech.

"It's nice to beat them. It bodes well but I'm sure they'll come back hard at us."

LEIGH FIGURES IN VAIN

A FIVE-wicket haul from Leigh Dunham came to nothing as Wayfarers let Wimborne and Colehill off the hook.

The East Dorset side slumped to 78 for eight after Dunham (five for 26) made inroads.

But Ben Ratcliffe (25) and a hard-hitting unbeaten 35 from tailender Chris Cornish, who benefited from two chances, enabled them to reach 154 all out.

Wayfarers lost two early wickets and the young pairing of Chris Blake (four for 22) and Gary Jones (four for 17) accounted for the remainder of the home side as only Jason Atkins (29) showed any resistance in a total of 74.

TRIO TOP SCORE

SHANE Hannam, Aaron Kendrick and Chris Baker all fired with the bat as Blandford secured a narrow win against Weymouth.

Batting first, Weymouth reached 184 for nine, with Richie Thomas claiming four for 30.

But Blandford got home with two wickets to spare as Hannam (44), Kendrick (39) and Baker (39 not out) all came to the party.

INSALL IN FORM

A GOOD team effort was the catalyst of Suttoners' 21-run win over Dorchester.

Chris Insall hit 44 as Suttoners reached 223 for eight batting first.

In reply, Dorchester were dismissed for 202 as captain Chris Rawlings and Frank Fitzjohn took three wickets apiece. They were ably supported by Ben Clifford (two wickets).
