Bash beaten in last-ball nightmare

BASHLEY suffered a heartbreaking last-ball defeat as Hampshire Academy tail-ender Tom Friend proved an arch enemy to the New Forest outfit.

The youngster kept his nerve to dispatch the final ball of the match for four, his boundary off Matt King sealing a dramatic one-wicket victory.

Friend's heroics came with the scores tied on 196 - and after he had also given Glyn Treagus the treatment by hitting a crucial six in the penultimate over.

Bashley skipper Andy Sexton said: "It was a good game of cricket, good for the spectators any way!

"It could have gone either way and, unfortunately, it didn't go our way.

"Overall though, I was fairly happy with the performance. It was an improvement on the previous week, especially in the batting department.

"There were a few areas in which, had we done a little bit better, then we probably would have won.

"We were 10 to 20 runs light and we bowled far too many extras. They were the two factors that cost us."

Sexton's thoughtful innings of 52, combined with 49 from Dorset's Glyn Treagus, provided the platform for Bashley to reach 196, although a late collapse saw them lose their final six wickets for just 28.

Treagus, in his first match of the season, was just one short of his half-century when he was snared by James Vince at backward point off Jake Lilley, the 16-year-old Bashley colt who bowled economically against his home club. Lilley was also at the crease when the winning runs were hit.

Sexton added: "It was good to have Glyn back because he makes a big difference. He looked like he hadn't been away and played really well for his 49. I was pleased to get a few myself after having a pretty dire season last year."

  • LYMINGTON became the latest victims of Ventnor's overseas find Nono Pongolo as they went down by five wickets at the Sports Ground.

The 19-year-old South African all-rounder claimed three wickets and hit an unbeaten 39 as the Isle of Wight outfit recorded a second successive victory.

However, Lymington will take heart from the performance of their new recruit from overseas after Aussie Craig O'Shannessy shone on his debut.

The 24-year-old Sydneysider top-scored with 43 as Lymington made heavy weather of reaching 155, thanks in part to Pongolo's late efforts with the ball.
