CAPTAIN Jack Hector smashed a boundary-laden 195 as Wareham beat Blandford by a colossal 401 runs – but still “felt like an idiot” when his innings came to an end.

Hector’s massive haul included 11 sixes, but he was dismissed just five runs short of a double century at Worgret Road after engaging in some friendly banter with team-mate Steve Bishop.

Bishop had recorded an impressive 189 in a recent match against Lytchett and as Hector passed that total, he was quick to let the Wareham opener know about it.

Hector told the Daily Echo: “Steve got 189 the other week and you could see he was gutted when I passed it – he was umpiring at the time and I started singing at him ‘Anything you can do I can do better’, but then I got out and looked a bit of an idiot!

“I just went out to get plenty of runs on the board and I kept hitting the ball really well. To be honest, there were a couple of dropped catches, but after I got the century I just started hitting.

“Everyone played well on the day with some really high scores but even I didn’t think we would get that many – we were all buzzing afterwards.”

The hosts batted first and opened with a 129-run stand between Dan Pope (73) and Bishop (82).

Hector was then introduced to the action, while Matt Truman (52) also scored well as Wareham set Blandford a mammoth target of 427 for the loss of just four wickets.

And Blandford’s day went from bad to worse when they lost their first wicket on the opening ball, before being skittled for just 26.

Matt Adami, a 14-year-old schoolboy, was the pick of the Wareham bowlers (4-18) as the visitors fell apart.

Wareham chairman Bob Huskinson added: “That was certainly the biggest winning margin that I can remember and definitely the biggest score since we reformed in 1992. It was all a bit embarrassing.”

Dorset cricket chiefs were last night thumbing the record books to find out whether the margin of victory was a league best.

Wareham’s total, however, was dwarfed by Wimborne’s 514 against Colehill in the top-flight on July 1 2006.

Ben Ratcliffe plundered 280 for Wimborne, while Colehill hit 244 in reply.

Wareham are unbeaten in Division Five South & East of the Dorset Funeral Plan Cricket League this season and now require just one more win to lift the title while Blandford sit bottom of the table with just one win this season.

Blandford skipper Steve Gale politely declined to comment when contacted by the Echo.
