AN UNBEATEN half-century from “outstanding” Jake Hurley helped Bournemouth get their season off to a winning start.

All-rounder Hurley played a starring role as Lions recovered from 28 for five to seal a four-wicket victory over Andover at Chapel Gate.

Batting at seven, he struck 51 to guide his side over the line after Bournemouth had bowled out the visitors for 118.

Skipper Chris Park, who made 34 playing a supporting role for Hurley, told the Daily Echo: “Being 28 for five was a bit of a shock to the system.

“They had three or four bowlers who were perfectly suited to the conditions and were taking advantage of that.

“Thankfully, Jake came to the party and put in an outstanding performance. I was at the other end doing what I could for him but he was the only player all day who timed the ball and hit it cleanly for boundaries.

“In that situation it was a case of making a counter-attack and he hit two or three shots as soon as he came to the crease which took the momentum back into our court.

“He was outstanding. He is a dangerous player and hits the ball cleaner than most.

“I knew then I just had to stay with him and give him as much of the strike as possible. It was chanceless from him and a great performance.”

Hurley’s knock came from 79 deliveries and included six fours and one six.

Earlier in the day, debutant Dan Conway had been the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, claiming four for 22 from 8.1 overs.

There were three wickets for spinner Rob Pack with Dave Kidner, Dom Clutterbuck and Hurley snaring one victim apiece.

Park added: “The bowlers did really well and we fielded brilliantly. We set the standards high and to bowl Andover out for 118 was a pleasing performance.

“But we need to improve and the batsmen need to get some practice in this week. Hopefully, the consistency will come with the batting.

“The talent is there on paper, it’s a case of putting those scores on the board for the batters.”

Bournemouth on Saturday make the trip to Old Tauntonians & Romsey, who were beaten by Hook & Newnham Basics on the opening day.
