JUBILANT Swanage skipper Ryan Norman hailed a "great start" to the season following their five-wicket win over much-fancied Poole Town.

Swanage, who also won by five wickets at Shroton on the opening day, have dropped just one point from their first two fixtures.

Norman's decision to insert Poole Town at Day's Park paid off as they restricted the visitors to 215 for eight – a total the Swans captain always felt would be "below par".

And so it proved as Ben Baczala (58) led the reply with the hosts passing their victory target at 216 for five off the fourth ball of the 49th over.

Norman said: "We bowled and fielded really well as a unit and restricted Poole to what we believed was a below-par score.

"We then set about chasing down the total and got a solid start from club legend Craig Wells and fellow opener Francis Kerins.

"Once Francis had departed, Ben Baczala came in and attacked the bowling to put us in a strong position.

"We lost a couple of wickets before myself and Pete Richards got us into a decent position. Pete and Tom Salmon then held their nerve to complete a good win.

"It has been a great start to the season for the club, especially with the second team also recording their second win of their campaign as well."

Poole Town opener Badrul Alam (47) and Scott Currie (79) helped guide the visitors to 161 for four from the first 39 overs.

And with wickets in hand, Poole Town had a platform to post a testing total, only for the Swans attack to then put the brakes on them.

Opening pair Norman (2-48) and Rob Hatchard (2-37) both chipped in with a couple of wickets, as did leg-spinner Steve Kent (2-28). Pete Richards (1-36), Elliot Baczala (1-31) and Ben Baczala (0-25) all returned tidy figures.

Craig Wells (31) and Francis Kerins (16) shared 46 for the first wicket before Wells was joined by Ben Baczala, the pair doubling Swans' score to leave them handily-placed.

And after Wells had gone, Baczala and Hatchard maintained the momentum and took the score to 142 for two with 13 overs remaining.

They both fell in quick succession – Baczala's innings including nine boundaries – and it was left to Norman (27), Richards (24) and Tom Salmon (10) to see Swans across the line.

George Bartlett made useful contributions with bat and ball as champions Wimborne & Colehill eased to a six-wicket victory at Shillingstone.

Bartlett (2-9) helped dismiss the hosts for 117 with Tom Caines (4-43) and Ed Bartlett (2-17) also among the wickets, while James Williams (1-9) proved almost unplayable from his 10 overs.

Although Colin Randall fell cheaply, Bartlett (26) underpinned the Minstermen reply.

And both Mark House (24) and Tom Caines (31) remained undefeated as they reached 121 for four with more than 15 overs in hand.
