SKIPPER James Park believes Lady Luck has yet to show her face following New Milton’s baptism in the top flight of the Southern Premier League.

Park, who captained the Green & Golds to the Division One title last season, thinks they have been a little unfortunate to lose their opening two matches.

Beaten by St Cross and Lymington, New Milton have picked up the most bonus points out of the four teams which are still seeking their first wins of the new campaign.

They will face a stern test as they look to open their account against joint-leaders and six-time champions Havant at Fernhill Sports Ground tomorrow (1pm).

Park, who played previously in the top division for Bournemouth, told the Daily Echo: “I think we have been a little unlucky in our first two games. We know it is a step up but I have full confidence in our lads.

“We showed against Lymington we could bat and give these teams a run for their money, if not beat them.

“They don’t come much harder than Havant but they will never have played at Fernhill before so we will see what we can do.

“I don’t think there is a great deal of difference between the top two leagues. You probably have a bit more depth, especially in the bowling department.

“You are not going to see too many weak fifth bowlers and you are going to find a batter batting at seven rather than an all-rounder or one of your bowlers. There is a bit of a gap but we should be okay.”

Park has been encouraged by the early-season form of winter recruit Tom Arnold from Totton & Eling, the 21-year-old Solent University student having crafted his maiden top-flight century in last week’s 25-run defeat by Lymington.

“He has settled in really well and is enjoying it,” added Park. “He looked good and batted really well. It was a great knock and great to see him get a ton on only his second appearance for us. Hopefully, he is going to flourish and there are plenty more runs in his locker because we are going to need them.”

Toby Edwards returns to replace club legend and Wave 105 competition winner Ryan Beck.
