LYMINGTON skipper Simon Beetham was at the centre of a beamer storm during their 25-run victory over local rivals New Milton.

Beetham claimed the wickets of James Haggaty and Lee Beck immediately after he had been penalised for bowling no-balls for high deliveries at the pair.

Although Beetham received a warning from the umpire, New Milton were aggrieved he had been allowed to continue bowling following the second incident.

New Milton captain James Park and his brother Nick both spoke to umpires Keith Williams and Adam Smith as the teams were leaving the pitch.

Beetham told the Daily Echo: “I bowled the first beamer and apologised straight away. The umpire said he was giving me a first warning and I said ‘okay, I understand’.

“Unfortunately, a couple of overs later, I bowled another one, although it was debatable whether it was because he was running down the wicket.

“The umpire gave another no-ball for height and I was ready to take my cap. But he said I would have to come off if I did it a third time.

“I could hear New Milton expressing their displeasure with it but just carried on until the umpire said otherwise.

“If I’m honest, I don’t know the rule but I think it is three strikes and you are out. The umpires are the ones in charge so you go by what they say.”

Darren Cowley (75), Ed Ellis (65) and Lewis McManus (45) all made valuable contributions as Lymington recovered from 40 for three to post a challenging 256 with Dan Loader (4-40) and Lee Beck (3-59) among the wickets for New Milton.

Tom Arnold underpinned the New Milton reply and a third-wicket stand of 126 with James Park (43) took them to 183 for two.

But once Arnold (100) and Park had become victims of Rich Lock (3-51), Milton went on to fall short at 231 for seven.

Beetham added: “We felt 250 was a good score on the wicket. We have batted with a little more maturity this year and just about held out with the ball.

“We didn’t bowl or field particularly well but did enough to win which was good. We will take it and see what we can do at Ventnor next week."
