LYMINGTON delivered one of the shocks of the season as they bagged a nine-wicket win over Premier Division leaders South Wilts.

Skipper Simon Beetham won the toss and elected to field, which proved a sound decision.

The visitors appeared to be ticking along reasonably well at 32 for one but then lost three wickets for the gain of just seven runs, Ben Ashkenazi striking either aside of Matt Metcalfe.

Medium-pacer Metcalfe then ripped into the middle order as he took four of the next five wickets on his way to superb figures of five for 27, the 29-year-old racking up 11 maidens in 21 overs.

Ashkenazi (4-21) mopped up the tail and South Wilts finished on a vulnerable 101.

Victory for Lymo was never in doubt as openers Ben Rogers and Dom Hand (39) steered their side to 80 before the latter was stumped.

Rogers continued to an unbeaten 50 and in tandem with Ryan Scott got the home side across the line in the 21st over.

Lymo skipper Beetham praised the bowling performance and in particular the contributions of Metcalfe and Ashkenazi.

He told the Daily Echo: "The win on its own was great but to win by that margin was quite remarkable and unexpected. It was a good day for us.

"Matt and Ben really set the tone and blew them away up top. Matt did what he usually does. He moved the ball around and was patient and got his wickets that way. He bowled more than 20 overs on the bounce and it paid off.

"Ben has good speed and is quite an aggressive bowler and he blew a few of them away with his pace.

"I think we shocked them early on and they never got back in the game.

"I wouldn't say it was an easy win but it was surprising that they didn't come back at us at any stage. With the quality of their batsmen, we thought they would come back at us but we just kept taking wickets.

"That showed how well we bowled.

"The result should give us a lot of confidence and now we have to make sure we beat the sides lower down the table that we should be beating."
