THREADBARE Bournemouth were swept aside as top-flight title hopefuls Havant won by eight wickets in the Southern Premier League t20 Cup on Sunday.

Opener Jonny Coombs (28) rattled off four boundaries for Lions, while Brad Schmulian (31) carried the fight before Curtis Watton’s 18 not-out ensured the Chapel Gate side reached 108 for seven.

Those efforts were in vain, though, as Peter Hopson (55*) immediately set about the chase with gusto, finding the boundary seven times from his 39 balls. Fellow opener Steven Matthews rattled off 25 before being caught-and-bowled by Jake Hurley.

Havant’s Christopher Morgan was rolled out by Todd Stevens but that proved a mere fly in the ointment for the free-scoring visitors who surpassed their target with seven overs to spare.

Elsewhere, Lymington progressed at the expense of New Forest rivals Bashley thanks to deadly duo Darren Cowley and Damien Mortimer.

Bashley’s first-team captain Richard Morris (67) rattled off seven fours and a trio of sixes but saw his comrades stifled by the bowling of Ed Freeman (3-27) and Simon Beetham (3-23) as the hosts set a target of 141.

Lymo’s Ben Rogers was swiftly seen off during the response but Mortimer (48*) and Cowley (90*) joined forces to put together a match-winning 114 for the second wicket.

The competition’s other confirmed quarter-finalists are South Wilts, Sarisbury, Paultons and Titchborne Park with two further second round matches yet to be played.
