Players steal limelight from the board
GOAL: Darren Anderton slots home Cherries' opener
GOAL: Darren Anderton slots home Cherries' opener

FOLLOWING AFC Bournemouth should carry a government health warning.

As if the boardroom pantomime has not been enough to stomach, Cherries fans are now experiencing another brand of far-fetched regular theatre.

Not content with allowing Jeff Mostyn et al to hog the spotlight, the Kevin Bond players are trying their utmost to ensure a rousing encore.

A third successive Saturday matinee performance provided gripping entertainment for Cherries supporters among a captivated audience of 6,867.

Again, there were thrills and spills aplenty as Bond's charges survived a series of heart-stopping late moments to register a fourth win on the trot.

And although the euphoria was tempered somewhat by results elsewhere, this latest victory at least kept alive their flickering hopes of avoiding the drop.

Bond, who was rewarded for masterminding Cherries' epic win at Swansea with the League Managers' Association performance of the week award, faced the press after directing this latest blockbuster.

"It was edge-of-the-seat stuff and we were hanging on for our lives at the end," said Bond. "You're bound to have a few difficult moments but we hung on and it keeps us in there fighting.

"They put us under enormous pressure and caused us problems. You're going to have scary moments and if you're going to go up or stay up then you need to survive them and thankfully we did."

With a final home game of the season against Crewe sandwiched between daunting trips to promotion chasing Walsall and Carlisle, Cherries are still the bookies' odds-on favourites to join Port Vale and Luton through the trap door.

However, barley three weeks ago, Bond's charges were being read football's last rites after defeat at Gillingham had left them 14 points adrift of safety. Tears in the dressing room at Priestfield were not without foundation and even the late, great Harry Houdini would have baulked at this task.

Bond admitted: "A month ago, I didn't think we would be at the stage where we would still have a chance to stay up with three games to play.

"I know we haven't achieved anything but it's great credit to the players that they have stuck in there in the face of adversity. They have pulled out some terrific performances and some excellent results so we are glad to be in with a shout."

The heroic exploits and professionalism, both of the players and management team, have also come against a backdrop of pure farce which has plagued the club since it plunged into administration two months ago.

It has been an often-absurd soap opera which plumbed depressing new depths last week when the club's ownership battle took daily, if not hourly, twists to become the laughing stock in footballing circles.

One chapter was apparently brought to a close on Saturday when current chairman Mostyn hosted the boardroom for the final time after losing out in the race to buy the club to EU UK Limited, a company set up to source migrant labour, which is expected to take control today.

Ahead of kick-off, Neil Young, whose retirement announcement last week was scandalously overshadowed by the off-field shenanigans, presented Mostyn and sidekick Steve Sly with a signed and framed commemorative shirt.

The Dean Court rumour mill has been working overtime in recent weeks, with suggestions the latest deal is far from concluded doing the rounds on Saturday.

Mostyn has publicly said he would talk to the new owners about an alliance, while some fans believe he and Sly could yet return to power.

Meanwhile, Bond and his players have been quietly and efficiently going about their business as they attempt to pull off the Great Escape, the film's theme greeting the team as they took to the pitch to do battle with the Pirates.

Bond said: "The players are aware of what's going on but they haven't let it affect them. They've got the bit between their teeth and have done really well.

"I keep them up to speed with as much as I know and all they're concentrating on is trying to keep us in as many games as possible to give us something to hang on to for as long as we can."

Darren Anderton gave Cherries a first-half lead to cling to when he marked his first appearance at Dean Court since early November by netting in the 18th minute. He finished calmly after Danny Hollands had provided the assist.

Although the founder of the Bristol and District Village Idiot Convention housed in the Main Stand clearly felt the goal should have been ruled out for offside, Rovers boss Paul Trollope had no complaints and voiced his opinions slightly more peacefully.

"My initial reaction was that he was offside," said Trollope, whose side have collected more points on the road this season. "But the players weren't incensed about it which tells you that maybe he wasn't."

Jo Kuffour also went close to scoring during a less than inspiring first half, while Rovers will point to chances from Chris Lines and Rickie Lambert which went begging.

Cherries doubled their lead 10 minutes into an incident-packed second period when Kuffour seized on a loose ball and applied a neat side-foot finish to register his fourth goal in as many games.

But the old adage about being at your most vulnerable just after you have scored reared its ugly head when Lambert slotted home his 17th goal of the season just a minute later.

In an engrossing closing 30 minutes, both sides hit the woodwork, Hollands's snapshot crashing back off the crossbar and Craig Disley's diving header in the dying seconds hitting the base of the upright.

We're hanging in there and although Crewe's result on Saturday v Yeovil was a disappointment, Yeovil themselves could also get sucked in. They have trips to Swansea and Notts Forest plus a home game v Leeds. On their current form you wouldn't expect them to get anything from those games, so we could still get past them.

Also, if next Saturday, Crewe and Gillingham lose and we win, by my reckoning with a game against Crewe to come that puts the possibility of staying up in our own hands.

We still have a mountain to climb, but Keep The Faith!

I have faith and i believe in miracles so who knows we may stay up. I just wish Mostyn had not put us in administration then failed in his bid. The 10 points lossed killed me and now all this bad publicity plus personal attacks on this site and others makes me wonder why do i bother. Yes we have been let down badly by certain Directors but hopefully they we go and a new broom will sweep clear this virus.

Come on cherries we can stay up and rid ourselves of these clowns at the same time.

Realsitically we need to win all 3 games. If we do its likely that we may just stay up. Anything else and its very unlikely.

Good luck.

I have never seen Cherries fans unite and cheer and chant like they did on Saturday. The whole stadium was electric, (Well Done Cherry Bear for pointing out that the referee was indeed an A*****ole!)With fans uniting and cheering on our lads like that, with the faith that we are holding in them the best stort out of all of this is that a community have united.

To be fair though Rob, Admin has been well over due. At least now this is a real chance to start a fresh financially and if the realistic does happen and we do go down, it could be a good thing for the club financially as if we are doing well in league 2, the crowds will be better.

If we had'nt gone into administration, the Inland Revenue would have had us liquidated and out of business. There was no other choice.

Treat each game like a cup final , 3 games and 9 points up for grabs.I think we can do it !!!! lets take as many fans as we can to walsall and support the team to another 3 points and another Bournemouth victory.

Excellent run of form lately and well done to the troops.

However, because Crewe and Millwall also won we are in fact in a worse position than we were before the game kicked off on Saturday.

Before Saturday we were 6 points from safety with 4 games to play. Now we are still 6 points from safety with 3 games to play.

I cannot see both Millwall and Crewe losing 2 of their remaining 3 games!!

Sadly we could be relegated at the weekend should we lose at Walsall and both Crewe and Millwall win.

By my reckoning, beyond Gillingham at the top of the relegation zone, any one of 4 clubs are in our sights if we can win our final 3 games: Millwall (49 pts GD -15), Yeovil (49 -20), Cheltenham (49 - 20) and Crewe (47 -16). If we get 50 points then each of them needs to get to 51 points because our goal difference (-13) is superior and will get even better after 3 more wins.

It's a big ask but if Crewe lose on Saturday and we win, then our fate will be in our own hands. I know it's a very big IF but as dragonm8 said if we win all 3 it's likely we will stay up. Keep the Faith!

Good point, I have looked at the league and agree with the above. If we win all 3 games I think that would be enough. Yeovil's run in is really bad as well, all top teams to play
