Cherries: Connell puts himself in the frame

WITH squeaky bum time fast approaching, it is a conundrum he could probably do without.

Cherries’ latest game of two halves has left boss Eddie Howe with a tricky selection dilemma.

Enlivened by the half-time introduction of Alan Connell, Howe saw his charges rescue a point thanks to the striker’s equaliser at the end of a vastly-improved second-half display.

Connell came on for Steve Fletcher, the impact substitute that Howe has been unable to leave out of his starting line-up in the past seven games.

Only time will tell whether Connell or Fletcher will get the nod when Cherries attempt to do to struggling Barnet tomorrow what they failed to accomplish against lowly Macclesfield.

Without Fletcher leading the line, Cherries have looked decidedly half-baked at times this season.

He will probably admit to having had a rare off day on Saturday, even though Nat Brown is unlikely to have had a free header for the Macclesfield goal had Fletcher still been in situ.

It could also have been a different story had Howe’s men supplied as many crosses in the first half and they did in the second.

In Fletcher’s absence, neither Connell nor Jeff Goulding has done enough to cement a regular place alongside star man Brett Pitman. Both have endured a fairly wretched season, for one reason or another.

Five league goals in 33 starts and 31 appearances from the bench between Fletcher, Connell and Goulding is testament to their combined lack of threat. It also goes a long way to explain Cherries’ dismal goal tally of 38, one fewer than third-from-bottom Torquay.

As a result, Howe’s selection policy has to be based on their respective other qualities.

A lesser man than Connell may have thrown in the towel against Macclesfield after two scuffed shots suggested another cow-and-banjo day was on the cards.

But despite fluffing his lines, the 27-year-old was rewarded for his persistence when he netted a well-executed equaliser to earn Cherries a potentially-priceless point, even though three had been expected.

After doubling his league goal return for the season to two, Connell invited his critics in the North Stand to hush their mouths by placing his finger over his lips in a ‘shush’ gesture.

Like him, the Dean Court faithful have also been suffering a lack of goal action, with seven in 13-and-a-half hours hardly likely to have had them raising the roof.

Had there been a sign for ‘thank you for your patience and understanding, now stick with us because we’re trying to do our best’, Connell probably would have used that instead.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, boss Howe revealed the half-time substitution had been “tactical”.

He added: “I just felt we weren’t getting any joy from going direct and felt we needed to get the ball down and play and Alan brings you that.

“The second half was a big improvement and also the big man had a bout of food poisoning in the week and wasn’t feeling 100 per cent.”

Howe was forced to shuffle his pack following a dire opening period when the Cherries play ers could have been forgiven for apologetically chanting at their supporters “we can see you sneaking out”. Burgers and beer certainly seemed more appealing after a helping of tripe.

Macclesfield threatened early on when Colin Daniel wasted a gilt-edged opportunity to head the visitors into a 17th-minute lead, nodding wide from just eight yards.

And Cherries sportingly repaid the compliment after the visitors’ attempts to catch them offside had backfired in spectacular fashion.

Despite being given the freedom of the 18-yard box, Pitman was culpable when he carelessly volleyed over after Jason Pearce had put Lee Bradbury’s free kick on a plate.

That was about as good as it got for Cherries in the first half, with audible groans from the crowd deservedly greeting numerous stray passes and over-hit through balls.

At the start of the second half, Silkmen goalkeeper Jonny Brain saved well from Bradbury before Shwan Jalal watched Richard Butcher’s curling effort fly past his left-hand upright. A rasping drive from Pitman also came crashing back off the crossbar as proceedings came to life.

Macclesfield silenced the home crowd when they had the temerity to take the lead after Brown arrived to power a header past Jalal from close range in the 62nd minute.

And although Cherries rallied, visiting substitute Emile Sinclair was errant with a chance that would have sealed it for the Silk-men had he not side-footed into Jalal’s arms with the goal gaping.

Connell made the visitors pay when he restored parity with a goal that left the visitors incandescent with rage, with referee Graham Horwood the subject of their ire.

Macclesfield boss Keith Alexander was convinced Connell had shoved defender Izak Reid in the build up and was banished to the stands after voicing his displeasure.

“I was very disappointed,” said Alexander. “He had to spot it, it was blatant and he was facing the play. It’s hard enough when you come to these places. The referee has got to get those decisions correct. It was absolutely scandalous.”

Howe was slightly less critical of Cherries’ powder-puff first-half showing, although still felt his side had deserved to win.

“I thought we did, especially on the second-half showing. We were excellent,” he said. “It was a bitter blow to go 1-0 down when we were probably having our best spell of the game.

“We created some good chances and the difference between the two halves was massive. We need to start games better here and get the opposition on the back foot.

“We came alive in the last 20 minutes and really needed to start like that. The crowd got with us and, if we’d had another 10 minutes, I think we would have got the goal but it wasn’t to be.”

No dilemma at all. Pitman relegated to bench Connell to start, this may give Pitman the wake up call he so desperately needs.

Alan Connell has been heavily criticised of late when coming off the bench, but the two goals he has scored this season have proved vital. Like any other player he will improve with being given more time on the pitch on match days. I have always appreciated his efforts for the club when called upon, and would like to see him given a chance in the starting line up on Tuesday.

Put Connell in midfield, he does all his best work in that area. Play him behind Pitman/Fletch/Feeney

I don't wish to be too harsh on Connell however for whatever reason he is lacking in confidence and need to play catch up! I guess it is easy for us the fans to score goals seating in the stands but it is a different ball game in real time and in real life. Miss-hitting the ball twice on Saturday will have done him no good for his confidence. I do hope that he is getting the right encouragement from his team mates. Come on the Cherries we will be there tomorrow night

agree buddy, pitman has gone in sulk mood again, he cost us the goal on sat, he is not a team player at the moment, if the ball is not at his feet he wont chase down, maybe he needs a rest.

U can not put him in mid field, he gets knocked off the ball every time. He is a striker, but not sure he is good enough for league two! If I were eddie I would drop Brett this Tuesday and give alan a chance to prove himself.

For those saying drop Pitman what the????
Yes he is moody, so is Rooney, Berbatov etc.
But where else are the goals coming from if he doesnt play? Connell isnt strong enough and lets be realistic, he missed two sitters before the one went in.
I believe next season we will have Lovell whatever league we're in, then Brett may struggle to make the team and these posts will be relevant. But now, we need goals and points and therefore you dont drop your main striker and pretty much only goalscorer to "prove a point"

Please lets not compare Brett to Rooney or Berbotov that is laughable, but for what ever reason we are not scoring goals only 12 in the last 16 games plus 2 pens and 2 pens missed. If we want to be in the playoffs this needs to improve. Hopefully when some of our key players are back Igoe, Garry, we can give better service to the strikers. Either way we need to play more like the game against county and less like Saturdays game.
However I still say whatever happens we have still done extremely well this season and well done to the team and management.

Give Goulding a chance. He has loads of potential and after a long break out from injury he was only just returning to form when he was dropped. He has pace which the other three strikers don't have. Would like to see him tried alongside Fletch at some point.

The fact that Bret knows that there isn't an immediate striker to take his place must make him appear even more (sorry to use such an emotive word) disinterested. Yes Rooney did act it but not now. He (Rooney) fights for every ball (Bret doesn't). I wouldn't like to see Bret dropped hower I would like to see him grow up and drop his sulking moods

I share the views of a lot of posters on this forum.
Brett Pitman is our top goal scorer but has not been on fom of late.
Saturday saw a disgruntled, almost couldn't care less attitude.
May be he should be rested, if for no other reason that to give him a break and find his form again.
Well done Alan, good goal, keep up the good work.

The sentence Alan doubled is total for the season to two says it all to me. Hopefully he will get his third before the season's over!

Pitman needs a shot across his bows but I think Eddie can do that verbally. He seems to have got this selfish 'I want to score all the goals' attitude again. An attacking mentor is required who regularly hit the back of the net. Get Le Tiss down for a one to one chat.

As for Alan, Neil's making a big deal in his article about shushing his detractors in the North Stand. I don't think he did that. I was sat right in front of the action and it was more of a kiss to his hand and a look to the heavens thanking his late Mum for helping him in his moment of need. It would be interesting to see the highlights to see what he actually did do.

I don't think Connell is the answer. He's just not robust enough. A parks player could have hit the target on those two missed sitters.

If Fletch is unavailable on Tuesday I would go with Goulding to start alongside Pitman. Anyway it's easy to pick the team on here!

Some interesting comments above. In my opinion Alan, Josh & Jeff all have the correct attitude & determination without being particularly gifted from a skill point of view. What would make a massive difference to their game is thinking more about what they do. Eddie could get them to reflect on their choice of passes and runs and maybe compare them with some premier league players. If Josh had made a more sensible run Pitman may not have played the pass that led to their goal. Jeff frequently makes the "wrong" choice and could be so much more effective with a little time spent thinking and watching top players.

We have no one at the moment to "put" his foot on the ball , to hold the ball, to slow the game down , to play the telling pass and to break down defences and probably won't have for at least another month, when hopefully we could have Sammy and Mark back in midfield. Sadly, Connell is a lightweight and Goulding just not good enough, even for this league, he has the attributes, but doesn't use them. If! we can hang on in for another 4/5 weeks , until we get our "Key" players back, we will go up. The fact is that we haven't really played well since we lost our midfield three months ago and the free flowing football of early season, is but a memory. We need Ryan back for the weekend and Marvin in midfield.

cherrychris75 says...
4:53pm Mon 22 Feb 10

Does anyone know when Sammy is realistically going to be back.
As SOC said, someone that can put their foot on the ball can make all the difference.
How about playing Feeney behind Brett and Fletch. Tell him to go wherever he likes and strengthen the midfield instead.
That way Danny and Anton can keep breaking.
It's amazing how people see completely different matches.
For me, if you take Fletch off you bring Goulding on. Take Brett off and Connell is on.
One things for sure, an evening match means Danny scores twice (no pressure).
Bring on Barnet!!

i for one would rather see goulding than connell if fletch is not fit and thats only because we have no other choice. neither of them are really any good. hope they prove me wrong. feeney needs to buck his ideas up too. we are carrying probably at least 3 players every week. if this team really wants out of this league they need to start stringing some decent results together starting with a nice win against barnet.

Notts Countys wage bill is 350% of income. What happened to the 60% rule?
Schmeical... £18,000 per week.
Lee Hughes £4,500 per week.
New owner is to spend next week or two considering whether to put the club into administration.
If he goes down that route it is likely he will lose most of his initial investment.
He says that the situation is as follows;
"If you consider the worst possible scenario, then double it, it is much worse than that".
Chickens and roost spring to mind.
I have a lot of sympathy with the County supporters, most of whom could see this coming a mile away.

Trouble is Wickerman you don't know how many players are carrying injuries. I think Feeney has been in that category recently. Coupled with that he has two players marking him most of the time.

The embargo has stuffed us to the extent that we can't give players a rest when they're not 100% fit. All the other teams in this league have brought players in to freshen up their squads. It hasn't been a level playing field this year.

Eddie and the team have performed miracles to be where they are in the league.

Completely agree.
I was actually impressed by Alan Connell, despite the missed chances. Rembember, he's warmed the bench all season.
The one player I can't work out is Jeff Goulding. He's 6'2" but wins nothing in the air and doesn't seem to want to put his foot in. I noticed that right in front of us on Saturday.
He seems to put the effort in but there's no real result. He's got the rest of this season and I hope he proves me and quite a few others, wrong.

I concur with comments above made by Lionheart. All things considered re Embargo, to be in 3rd place is a fantastic achievement and the players and management alike deserve a lot of credit.

Players need games which provide them with match fitness, confidence usually follows. If Alan Connell & Jeff Goulding can't gate a game, how are they expected to improve? It's a chicken and egg situation!

If I was giving constructive critiscism, I'd say that Jeff needs to attack the ball more and Alan must try to be a little more composed in the final 3rd - but that's very easy for me to say!

County should be subject to a points deduction for knowingly breaching the wage cap criterion. I've read that Trew will be deciding imminently whether to put the Magpies into Administation.

One of the many subjects fans should discuss with Tony Kleanthous, Chairman of Barnet FC if they have the opportunity to buttonhole him tomorrow night if he attends.

Division 2 FL Board Representative! What a joke, as everything to discuss about League 2 at FL Board level is always a conflict of interest.

Never mind, the FL Board is a good passport to FA Council and FA Committees. Enough said!
