Arber penalty is Dagger through the heart for Cherries

MARK Arber’s disputed first-half penalty dented Cherries’ revival as Dagenham & Redbridge upset the apple cart at Victoria Road.

Cherries headed to east London bidding to extend to five their unbeaten run, while the Daggers were looking to avoid a fifth successive defeat.

And the contest was settled when Daggers skipper Arber netted from the spot after Steve Fletcher had been judged to have shoved Peter Gain six minutes before half-time.

Marvin Bartley was pressed into action as an emergency central defender, the midfielder deputising for the stricken Ryan Garry, who was ruled out by a groin injury.

Josh McQuoid was the only change to the starting line-up following the midweek win over Notts County, although Garry’s absence forced Jason Tindall on to the bench.

Arber’s 39th-minute spot kick separated the sides at the interval, a turgid opening period having been largely forgettable from the visitors’ point of view.

Daggers’s uncompromising route-one approach proved both ugly and effective as Howe’s men were forced to defend in numbers for long periods.

With proceedings underwhelming in their lack of quality, chances were few and far between during the first half as the match ball took a relentless pounding.

And when it was eventually treated with any respect, Brett Pitman’s caressed effort cleared the crossbar after a Rhoys Wiggins corner had been flicked into his path.

Earlier, Jason Pearce had headed straight into the arms of Daggers goalkeeper Tony Roberts, while Paul Benson had arrived to guide a Graeme Montgomery centre past the upright.

Arber’s weak header presented Pitman with a sight of goal on 35 minutes, only for Scott Doe to intervene and deprive the Cherries striker of a shooting opportunity.

Referee Oli Langford pointed to the spot after deeming Fletcher had nudged Gain, with Arber making no mistake from 12 yards.

Josh Scott and Montgomery both sent shots past the post early in the second half, while Liam Feeney’s snapshot was carried out for a corner by Roberts.

A swift break by Daggers ended with Gain sweeping a left-foot drive wide of the target after Montgomery had countered following a Cherries corner.

Roberts saved from Pitman’s header before Cherries had a double let-off when Benson’s thunderous drive came crashing back off the underside of the crossbar.

And after the loose ball had fallen to Montgomery, he saw his goalbound follow-up from a tight angle hacked off the line by an alert Bartley.

As the chances continued to come at both ends during a vastly-improved second period, Danny Green blazed well wide from the edge of the box.

A Wiggins free kick eventually fell to Anton Robinson, although his hurried shot failed to test Roberts before the Cherries midfielder then fired over from distance.

Cherries’ hopeful penalty appeal fell on deaf ears following a frantic goalmouth scramble before Scott was denied by Jalal’s top-drawer save late on.

Jalal’s outstanding double save thwarted Scott on the stroke of full-time before Cherries failed to create a chance of note during four minutes of added time.

How predictale was this result after such a good win in midweek?
Why is it AFC cannot build on a good run?
Ok so the ref cheated us for their penalty by the sound of it, but having listened to the commentary we created virtually nothing in the second half when we should have been pegging them back.
D & R should have instead scored a hatful second half.
Rotherham won but at least Bury lost, so with two home games to come it's back to needing consecutive victories to remain in second place.

Poor old Fletcher, it wasn't his fault, he's just too old to stand up by himself and was just trying to hold onto Mr Gain who pretended to be shoved.

No doubt it would have been a different performance with Garry playing and Marv in his midfield role. Just need to bounce back from a tough away game: two home games gives us a great opportunity to do so so no need to panic!

I can just imagine John Stills team talk, we are not playing well but today we are playing the cherries they will give us a helping hand, this type of performance and result has been a hallmark of cherries teams for many years, when will these players wake up and realise they have got themselves into a good position through hard work and despite many obstacles in their way, but I am fed up with stories from the players of how they know they are good enough to beat anyone , well prove it lads and stop allowing points to drift away, the match starts when the referee blows his whistle not after 40 minutes, and if the board are guenine in wanting to assist their manager then CLEAR THE DEBT LIFT THE EMBARGO NOW, you will be repaid by increased support

Just got back from the game, we totally missed garry at the back and marvyn biting in the midfield, never a penalty... Pitman totally sulking all game you could have guessed his mood by looking at him the warm up..

why does goulding never get a go from the bench, connell is dreadful, light weight and not league standard.

Just when things were looking back on track, oh well it's the same for everyone after all Bury lost today so we are no worse or better than those around us at putting a run together. Let's hope this is the last of these little blips and we can finally get a run going, it will be the side that manages that who will get automatic promotion, we are not out of it yet!!

From the euphoria of tues/weds posts to this.Lighten up everyone, nobody is putting a run together of any significance in this league. There are no world beaters in this league as we have seen. Those with games in hand have to win them.Following cherries has always been a rollercoaster ride so jump aboard and enjoy a thrilling run in which just might get us automatic promotion or at least the play-offs.Fasten your seat belts.COYR.

Daggers defended very well today and gave us no time at all on the ball. Agree with the other post who went today, pitman sulking around again. Any header Fletch won, there was no-one from us to pick up the second ball! Very soft penalty. Jalal was outstanding today...yet again.

Two wins and a defeat from every three games should be the target for promotion.Stick to that and we will go up.Getting those points sooner rather than later would be nice though, but this is AFCB,doing things easy just isn`t us.

743 of our supporters in attendance, disappointed on this occasion, but it would seem, by Neil's report that the result was fair, considering the work rate of our goalkeeper.
Have to agree with "Mossy's" comments above, we are Cherries supporters and well used to facing setbacks. But we are still in second place which is wonderful in our prevailing circumstances. This is not complacency, this is as it has always been in football. You win some ,you lose some. Keep trying lads and good luck in the next two games at home.

went to game yesterday, what a great turnout by the afcb traveling army. The new away stand at Dagenham is excellent, with great facilities inside, its just a shame that the afcb team didnt turn up on the pitch, apart from Jalal and Bartley. We were really bad,and as for Pitman he just didnt want to be there all afternoon, has anybody got a nappy to fit him,as he acted as a baby all afternoon. As for the penalty, what penalty. The ref diserved all the abuse he got during the afternoon,he should never be allowed to take charge of another game. How can we play so well in midweek and so bad on Sat,guess we missed Garry, and moving Bartley messed the midfield up,because we had no midfield yesterday. After yesterdays performance and with all our promotion rivals having games in hand on us we will be lucky to finish in a playoff position.Does any body know why Jalal was argueing with Tindall as he walked off the pitch at fulltime yesterday.Message to afcb team, fans doing there bit,now do yours.

As i said two weeks ago we should rest Pitman hes done nothing for the last dozen games and i got slated big time. Why not try Goulding what can we loose Brets not performing anyway ???, Maybe if he has to fight for his place it might bring back his form if not at least he will be rested as he's played every game this year.
If it dosn't work he's always on the bench to bring on.
If we don't try something new and he keeps his sulks up we will continue to play with 10 1/2 men.

once again the away supporters turn up in numbers to support the team, and once again they are let down by certain players on the field.there was only one worthy shot in the first 45 minutes and that went flying over the bar why is the team so inconsistent. goals win games and if you dont shoot you wont score.lets hope for a better performance next week.

sorry but I was right the first time, we may have been hard done by the penalty, but this does not excuse the poor performance by players who should have been on a high after their recent good form, we all pleased by what they have achieved this season against difficult odds, but they have set high standards for themselves, we should not be so ready to trot out excuses for them when they fail

Sounds like Jalal was man of hte match again.
Cherries up to their usual 'don't want to be there' atittude (at least certain members of the team).
We were again hampered by injury and a weak referee.
D & R didn't win the game, they were handed it on a plate.
Onwards and upwards, hopefully the Cherries will be back on form for the next two home games.

Went to the game yesterday, sadly we lost to a very well organised dagenham team and a lot of credit has to go to them as they fully deserved the 3 points. Cant be to upset with the decision as we have had 2 go in our favour like that, and were due to one to not go with us so to speak. As usual the knives are out for Pitman. He did nothing wrong yesterday, and was no worse than any player. Mcqoid and feeney didnt beat there full backs once and he had no service. Its a shame that when Brett has an off game that nobody could step up. He was superb against rotherham and notts county, how can you say he is not performing?? were 2nd in the league!! When we are defending, he is just off the front post clearing headers and releases pressure being able to actually having the composure to hit space so the ball does not come straight back at us. Drop him for goulding? Eddie is not stupid and would have put him on instead of connell if he was worth his salt and look how well he does! As i said swanage fan, you were wrong 2 weeks ago, and your wrong now.Thought Jalal was superb yesterday, and by far our m.o.m. lets hope for better fortunes at home next week, with the hitman leading the line, im sure he can bag a brace again. Just saw us doing the cross bar challenge,we got good characters in the team, i did like bradders taking the mick out of brett as he went to take his shot, the lads are really together and we should be behind them, not putting them down at the first opportunity, we beat crewe, rotherham and county with 14 players fit, 2 good home wins and we are flying, ave it! come racing.

Bit harsh!!!
We won our previous two away games when we were given no chance and Saturday once again due to the win over County fans expected another great win and performance, now we have seen time and again after a great win that teams often perform below par in the next game, add to that the injury and players out of position and the result doesn't look so bad. We are not going to win every game, our away record has been brilliant this season plus we have started to win at home again, let's get off the players backs every time there is a defeat, it goes from one extreme to the other they can never seem to please some fans!!

Always got to stick up for your main man who has scored 17 goals this season, assists a lot aswell in goals, at crewe and and county where he didnt score, defends corners superbly, yeah i think i would stick goulding up front to.... haha,Not his mum or dad, just appreciate the job he does for the team, but when the cherries get beat, dont worry, it will always be the hitman that people go after. Nice to see the fans saturday clapping him off, and glad he responded.

job he does for the team?? granted a talented indivdual but selfish, sulky and constantly blames his team mate when things dont go his way.. He even done it in the warm up yesterday when he blazed two shots miles over..

He shows frustration yes, but all good strikers are selfish, would you prefere alan connell up front?? of course you wouldnt (i hope). When he was asked to play left wing, he did it, and when we have made a sub and changed formation, he has done it,he is an integral member of the TEAM.The couple of interviews he has done with the echo, he has always talked about the teams success ahead of his own, and being in the situation we are, i think that indicates he is a team player. We should count ourselves lucky that he has not missed a minute of league football this season (as far as i no), the thought of goulding and fletch up front does not fill me with great hope. Those of you who saw the crossbar challenge can see that there all together and his "sulks" are tolerated or just part of his personality, if it was affecting the team negatively then fair enough, but while we are 2nd in the league and he is regularly scoring, you cant knock him. up the cherries.
