Cherries: Bees send season towards an uneasy end

EASTER Monday became Black Monday as Cherries slipped to a potentially-disastrous defeat at the hands of League Two leaders Brentford this afternoon.

Billy Clarke’s first-half goal settled a highly-charged and fractious encounter in the visitors’ favour as the 10-man Bees edged closer to automatic promotion.

And with Cherries’ relegation rivals Chester and Grimsby both winning, defeat again sounded the alarm bells for Eddie Howe’s anxious troops.

Cherries head to Chester on Saturday with just a solitary point now separating the two clubs – with their Football League status very much in the balance.

Clarke administered the killer blow four minutes before half-time, although the Bees’ win was marred by an unsavoury incident involving team-mates Darren Powell and Karleigh Osborne.

Former Saints defender Powell received his marching orders for throwing a punch at Osborne after the two players had clashed following a Cherries corner.

But despite playing 10 men for most of the second half, Cherries failed to find a way through and now face a nailbiting finale to the season.

Mark Molesley and Steve Fletcher were both restored to the Cherries starting line-up as boss Howe made two changes.

Molesley, who missed Saturday’s defeat at Barnet due to flu, replaced Lee Bradbury in midfield, while Fletcher came in up front for Jeff Goulding.

Around 2,000 travelling supporters from West London boosted a season’s best crowd of 8,168 for this eagerly-awaited Bank Holiday showdown.

Although Cherries made an encouraging start, Bees goalkeeper Ben Hamer was not unduly troubled by early efforts from Brett Pitman and Fletcher.

Pitman’s weak long-range shot after seven minutes trickled wide before Fletcher headed tamely into the arms of the Brentford stopper.

Tempers flared following a clash of heads between Pitman and Powell after 15 minutes. Fletcher, who was unhappy with Powell’s challenge, received a booking following a heated exchange with Bees midfielder Marcus Bean, who was also cautioned.

Referee Gavin Ward was unmoved after Fletcher had gone to ground in the penalty area following a brush with Bees skipper Alan Bennett.

As the league leaders began to find their feet, Adam Newton’s shot fizzed over the crossbar following a neat lay-off by Clarke.

Cherries goalkeeper Shwan Jalal saved comfortably from Clarke’s drive before Danny Hollands’s tenacity created an opening for Molesley.

Hollands nicked the ball wide to Molesley who stepped inside before unleashing a powerful angled drive, which Hamer beat away with his fists.

And after Hollands had seized on the loose ball, David Hunt charged down his follow-up strike from 20 yards before Bennett’s dipping volley just cleared the crossbar.

Brentford took the lead four minutes before the break when Clarke, on loan from Ipswich, headed home his third goal since arriving from Portman Road last month.

The lively Irish striker was on hand to divert Sam Wood’s shot past a stranded Jalal, his deft header giving the Cherries goalkeeper no chance.

Scott Guyett replaced Ryan Garry at the interval before Cherries went close to drawing level following Pitman’s 49th-minute corner.

But after Hamer had spilled his delivery under pressure from Fletcher, Hollands’s goalbound shot was cleared off the line by Hunt.

Just seconds later, a heated exchange between Powell and team-mate Osborne turned nasty when the two players became embroiled on an ugly brawl.

And after consulting his assistant, referee Ward brandished a straight red card at Powell after deeming him to have been the instigator, with Osborne also booked.

Bees boss Andy Scott immediately made a substitution, sacrificing midfielder Newton for defender Mark Phillips.

As Cherries looked to make their numerical advantage pay, Anton Robinson’s snapshot flew well wide before two more resonable chances also came to nothing.

Firstly, Molesley’s thunderous drive struck Phillips before Hollands saw his piledriver parried low down by Hamer at his near post.

As referee Ward started to lose control, Cherries substitute Jeff Goulding was booked for taking a dive – just seconds after Clarke had gone unpunished for the same offence.

Despite throwing the kitchen sink at Brentford during the closing stages, Cherries failed to break down the visitors’ rearguard, leaving the season headed towards an uneasy finish.

Cherries (4-4-2): Jalal, Cooper, Pearce, Garry (Guyett, h-t), Wiggins, Feeney, Hollands (Goulding, 77), Robinson, Molesley, Fletcher (Bradbury, 86), Pitman. Unused subs: Connell, Cummings.

Brentford (4-4-2): Hamer, Osborne, Powell, Bennett, Dickson, Newton (Phillips, 52), Bean, Hunt, Wood, S Williams (Smith, 90), Clarke (M Williams, 81). Unused subs: Brown, Poole.

Booked: Bean, Osborne.

unfortunately easter looked a pivotal point given that the cherries faced two hard matches while chester and grimsby had two fairly easy games. We probably could have been in a worse position than we are. Still in our own hands and if we can't beat chester and grimsby then we dont deserve to stay up. No matter the ending, expect the next few weeks to be agony!

Simply not good enough today - Brentford were nothing special but again we huffed and puffed but never looked like scoring.
Where were the tactics when Brentford were reduced to ten men ? Why wasn't Wiggins told to take on the space on our left flank ? How did he win man of the match when every time he got to the half way line, all he did was send floating balls forward to our ineffective strike duo ?
Fletcher was hassled out of the game by their two centre halves, pitman was mediocre, our midfield was poor today - we look short of ideas again.
A bad day all round with the other reults too - we have to win at Chester now, simple as that.

Had it not been for Eddie, Jo and Jason we probably would have joined Luton by now. There is still hope and we the fans have a great part to play. Whilst it may not be a very good excuse the officials today left a lot of room for improvement.

It is about time that referees book time-wasting goallies as soon as they start to do it adding on time is not a deterrent being yellow carded is.

The team did well in the second half but once Brentford started to defend in numbers it was going to be very hard to break them down despite the help from two of their players!!

Once again we struggle against 10 men.The writing was on the wall after the sending off.Fletch says the players are devastated;what about the fans?In fact `to all our players` remember what this feels like before you play the next 3 games.
I wonder if Eddie has referees watched like he does other teams, because I reckon brentford`s manager did his homework on this ref and told his players " go down at every opportunity because you`ll con the ref into giving us lots of free-kicks".

not having seen the match it would be unfair of me to be critical, it does appear to be a great shame that honest workers like all the admin staff have their jobs threatened by the lack of results from a team that seems to be unable to break down any team that is prepared to play it tight, players whose jobs are also at risk should not need motivation if they cannot step accross the white line and do their jobs then their has to be a question mark over their character, on the other hand I suppose it is quite understandable when we see the antics of the field, those connected with the club either in ownership or potential ownership should be ashamed the way they have allowed this club to be run into the ground

I don't think there is a problem with motivating the players they have taken us from -17 points to still be sitting above the relegation zone with three ga,es left, it is going to be tough but they have shown they have it in them, you act like it's already over, well sunshine we still have it on our own hands and if you think these players will just give up I question your motives.

Bournemouth will still stay up regardless having lost today. We had two very tough games this easter weekend.A draw would have been good enough but with no news of the club take over i really feel that this is effecting the players a great deal even though Eddie and his players are trying to keep us in L2.It must be heartbreaking for Eddie and the players after excellent recent runns, but sometimes things wont always go the way we want it..I think it be all guns out against Grimbsy and Chester and i feel it will be Chester going down on the very last game of this season. If the manger and the team can switch off from whats going on with the club and the other results then Bournemouth will have a chance.

PS If Bournemouth do go down we will be back up and it will give the chance for the club to clear anymore outstanding debts oweing...

Come on Bournemouth win all the next games and shut those ones up that think you finshed with.

Brentford are top of the league because they are a strong well organised side who are hard to break down, thats why we didnt get anything out of the game.on the day we were out battled by a better side.you have to take it on the chin that some teams are going to be better than us,swallow your pride and move onto the next game.Bigger worry is not hearing anything about potential takeover, absolutely despiccable that the club havnt kept us in touch with what is going on,good or bad.Us fans are the future of the club afcb, its about time you gave us some news.

The Brentford key players were all loanees and Powell apart from being sent off was solid against Fletch.. by the way Mosely had a great shot saved in the first half and Hollands scuffed the follow up. When it mattered Brentford got the breaks. Which seems to be the way it goes at the moment for The Cherries.

The players are giving it all they've got, but currently they are a little bit short of what is needed.
It was always going to go right to the wire. We will all be at Morecombe needing a result. We had no right to think that we could maintain the improved form or that Chester and Grimsby would just fade away. Football just isn't like that. So, Lymocherry, when you slated me for predicting a revival from Grimsby and Chester, you were wrong, even though you will not admit it.

Grimsby and Chester have only won today and does not count as a revival as both teams have not played well.Bournemouth really need to win all 3 games and then the party can start.

Eddie has no news of who is taking over and is looking at the games ahead not what is going concerning the take over..

Dont worry lads Boscombe only need 4 points to survive, they will lose to Brentford, draw away with Chester and then beat Grimsby at home, safe at last. they will then draw with Morecambe on the last day finishing 4th from bottom. So take it easy out there.

This is now the time. If we dont beat Chester or Grimsby then we dont deserve to stay in this league and deserve to be relegated. fair and square.

I think Chester and Grimsby are on a revival. Without the surprising Easter Saturday defeats, Chester would have been unbeaten in 5 and Grimsby unbeaten in 4. Good news is that Chester seem to be winning only away and they have 2 of the last 3 at home, but the bad news is that Grimsby aree winning home games and should win their 2 home games v Port Vale and Macclesfield. Think Chester will be the team to finish above : need to nail them Saturday! A point wont be enough.

The simple answer to why we are not hearing much about the takeover is down to the fact that AFCB relegated out of the league is worth less than AFCB staying in the league.

We the fans some time think that these so-called business men have the same interest in the club as we do when their only interest is in looking after their money.

Lets face it if you were buying a car and knew that the seller was desperate to sell you too would want to save few bob by waiting until he had no option to but sell it at a lower price.

I am not suggesting that it is right and ethical but ethics and business don't always go hand in hand

When was this prediction of a revival then?? Do you mean your worst case scenario that still saw us stay up without a win, well m8 you can have that one, and we did need a win, over Rochdale. Yesterday was one of those days that just happen, and when did anyone think it was going to be a walk in the park??
Bottom line is we must win at Chester if we are going to stay up. As for questioning devon exiles motives, I am quite right to do so, he is stating that the players have no heart for the fight and are giving up, if he feels that way (without seeing them play), then there is a question of motive it's not a personal attack as you put it!!!

I fear that the "off field" inaction is beginning to effect the player's perfomance, since they probably know more than us about the true situation and "lady luck" isn't with us. The Cherries will not survive a relegation into non League Football, the ground costs alone would break them. I rather fear that April the 25th will see the last game ever played at Dean Court. The signs of no one in control too are evident, on Saturday many Season Tickets holder found Brentford supporters in their seats and a large contingent allowed to sit in the home supporters part of the East Stand, again excluding Season Tickets holders. The Club needs every penny it can get, but there would have been trouble had we won.

Here we go again! Why is it hopeless sides like Chester & Grimsby can grind out a win when the going gets really tough & AFC can't?

I'll tell you why. NO BOTTLE! The team clearly thought staying up was going to be a cake walk after moving several points clear of the drop zone a couple of weeks back. Now look at us. Back to back defeats to leave us teetering on the brink.

I guarantee Chester will beat us next week, we'll only draw against Grimsby & we'll face the long trip to Morecambe needing to win & other results to go our way to have any chance of staying up. (I desperately hope I'm wrong though ok!)

Looking on the bright side though, if Eddie can keep the squad together there's a good chance of a promotion push next season..... in the Conference that is, with lots of Setanta TV money to boost the coffers.

That's providing we actually have a club here to support.
