MISSED CHANCES COST CHERRIES

MORE than 1,000 Cherries fans made the journey to Barnet this afternoon – but they went home with little to show for their trip as Eddie Howe’s men fell to a 1-0 defeat.

The Dean Court outfit dominated for long periods of the League Two clash but, for all their chances, failed to make a breakthrough.

And they paid the ultimate price when Barnet’s 40-year-old striker Paul Furlong settled the contest with the game’s only goal – the 200th of his career – on 51 minutes.

But with Chester City and Grimsby Town both losing, Cherries remain four points clear of the relegation zone.

Manager Eddie Howe was forced to change the side which hammered Rochdale 4-0 last weekend, with midfielder Mark Molesley ruled out through illness.

He was replaced by utility man Lee Bradbury, while Jeff Goulding got the nod to partner Brett Pitman in attack as Howe opted to rest Steve Fletcher ahead of Monday’s match against Brentford.

Albert Adomah, who scored both goals in Barnet’s 2-0 victory at Dean Court in December, was named in the Bees starting XI, alongside veteran in-form forward Furlong.

With the large section of visiting supporters in fine voice, Cherries soon found their feet playing down the steep Underhill slope.

And the travelling fans almost had something to cheer of 11 minutes, only for the woodwork to deny Howe’s men.

Rhoys Wiggins delivered an accurate cross-field ball into the Barnet penalty area and Bradbury leapt well to beat his marker at the far post, only to see his powerful header cannon back off the crossbar.

Cherries continued to enjoy plenty of possession and Goulding saw a decent effort blocked as the visitors made most of the early running.

Pitman was the next man to go close as the top scorer latched on to a hopeful long ball, but Barnet keeper Jake Cole produced an exceptional reaction save to keep his volley out.

From the resulting corner – taken by Pitman – Jason Pearce almost broke the deadlock, but his looping header was cleared off the line by the hosts’ captain Neal Bishop.

A warning that Cherries could be made to pay for not making their dominance tell came on the half hour.

In space 30 yards from goal, Yannick Bolasie’s ambitious drive came as a surprise to Shwan Jalal – but it sailed high and wide.

At the other end, Liam Feeney tried his luck from a similar range but that effort, too, proved wayward.

Cherries had a scare when Pearce, again superb alongside Ryan Garry at the heart of the defence, went down following a clash with Furlong. But thankfully, the wholehearted centre-half was fit enough to carry on.

With half-time approaching, Barnet finally started to show the sort of form which has seen them move edge clear of the drop zone in the past few weeks.

The Bees began the second period on the front foot, as well, and they punished Cherries’ first half wastefulness by going ahead on 51 minutes.

Furlong was the man on target as he escaped the tight marking of Pearce and Garry for the first time all afternoon to head home Kenny Gillet’s cross.

Fears that it might be one of those days for Cherries grew again in the 54th minute as Goulding’s goalbound effort was agonisingly hacked off the line with goalkeeper Cole beaten.

Cherries’ frustrations at the quick turnaround in fortunes showed with captain Shaun Cooper and Goulding both going into the referee’s notebook for late tackles.

Howe decided he’d seen enough on 65 minutes and the Cherries boss threw Fletcher and Sammy Igoe on in a bid to get back into the game, with Feeney and Goulding making way.

The move almost paid dividends with 19 minutes remaining when the ball fell nicely for Igoe 20 yards out, but his well-struck effort was straight at a grateful Cole.

With the action livening up, Jalal had to be at his best to tip Adomah’s drive over the bar.

As Cherries struggled to unlock the hosts’ defence, Bradbury joined Pitman and Fletcher in attack, while defender Scott Guyett replaced Cooper and promptly joined the growing frontline.

The chance of an equaliser did eventually come and it fell to Bradbury on 87 minutes.

Joe Devera’s back-header dropped short of Cole and fell invitingly to the former Manchester City star, but the Barnet keeper raced off his line to bravely block the effort.

And that proved to be the last opportunity as Cherries’ dominant first-half display went without reward.

Luckily the teams below us have not made any ground by losing. Come on you Cherries Monday will be great game to watch. The safety line is not too far away now.

The silence from the boardroom is far more worrying!!!

We are giving it our all on the pitch, but it is really worrying that we are not hearing anything about the takeover.

bad luck lads, but please echo reporters no interviews with the players next week telling us its the most important games of the season we already know that, instead pretend you are a journalist by getting of your backside and finding out the truth behind what is going on off the field, and a memo to Mr Murry you are in danger of losing the creditibility that you may have with fans, when you say statement held up for at least 24 hours I take you at your word, but nearly a week on and still nothing suggests you are playing games, please prove me wrong

evon - agreed,,,,,its c*ap reporting usually. They talk to players who say this and that about nothing and how grateful they are because the kit man wipes their ar*e... blah blah blah.

Its poor reporting on nothing.... where in the background, we are facing extinction again, we are going into administration if we dont get a new owner.

i don't think most people realise how close we are.

This was a game of two halves. I don't know what was said at half time but the second half was surprisingly disappointimg after a very good first period when we took control of a poor game and poor opposition

If any one wanted a wake up call about possible life in The Blue Square then this was it. Barnet's no nonsense aopproach reminded me of Boston United when they were in the league but with better players - and the ground? Once I found it in the housing estate, something that has not seen any change apart from a coat of paint in thirty years

The players would not want to play in places like this and worse! so let's win on Monday and leave the non league world to Chester or Grimsby

spot on about extinction and admin alumchineboy. end of the week has passed. it is now sunday in the UK and i for one have no faith in this takeover bid. clearly there are still massive issues, the main one being the money on offer to baker and the other being the amount of cash available after paying baker. we need to be 10 points clear of relegation by the end of the season. that basically means we really need to win every one of our remaining games. I am sure eddie is thinking the same way and will tell the players this. SOS HARRY

A Barnet supporter said "daylight robbery" but we were to blame. That game should have been wrapped up in the first 15 minutes. I know Brett Pitman has done some great things but again, he missed a great chance early on and with Lee Bradbury hitting the bar,it was Notts County Deja-vu. Quite how we could go from first half complete control to second half hoof ball I don't know. Furlong's goal was either brilliantly placed or lucky and we allowed a well organised but very average bunch of triers to complete the double over us. 4-0 versus Rochdale and then this. The ref and linesman left their brains at home and Furlong took full advantage. Cheats do prosper.
Take over? What take over?
Glass half full. There's another bid on the table. Adam Murry and Paul Baker are keeping quiet this time. Everything will be OK.
Glass half empty.
Murry pulls out this week. AFCB go to the wall. Mostyn and Baker have overplayed duff hands and both end up losing big.

Congratulations to 1,268 loyal supporters proving their interest in the teams efforts to stay in league football. Regardless of a disappointing result we are still top at the wrong end of the table. We all know we should not have to rely on other teams' results, but must remember we started the season with a 17 point deficit.
With four games left to play, the team have done remarkably well to still be in with a chance of survival. Good luck to them against Brentford tomorrow. It would be nice to win against one of the favourites for promotion.

Remaining positive after yesterdays results, even if you don't get anything against Brentford tomorrow, and I'd expect you to get a point, as long as Chester don't win at Accrington that would mean that if you beat them next Saturday you'll be safe, at least on the pitch any way!

Regarding the takeover and the conflict of intrests that exists with PB maybe he is waiting to see the result next Saturday and what impact a 10 point penalty on AFCB would make to Chester's survival hopes? Hmm.....

ADAM MURRY PULL YOUR SOCKS UP AND TELL US WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OR ARE YOU IN THE SH*T??????????

Eddie and the players have turned Bournemouth around big time and are puting loads of hard work in keeping Bournemouth in L2,dont you think you owe it to them to now get your **** act together and get this on going saga over with...Its bad enough that the echo keeps going on and on and on about who is or who might be taking the club over when nothing is happening whatsoever,we all glad you put in 33,000 of your own money in to save the club with the recent debts but what was your true intention, because i feel you leading us all on and if things are not sorted out in the next week or so,then the club will fold,i want to remain postive but now time to get things done or play out the last remaining games to bring the club to the end.A win Monday is a must or things might go all the way back to square one.

GET A STATEMENT OUT THIS WEEK AND STOP ALL THE CRAB AS ITS HURTING THE MANGER AND PLAYERS JUST AS MUCH AS THE FANS..
