CHERRIES saw their winning pre-season run ended as Chilean international Fabian Orellana’s stunning strike gave Valencia a 1-0 victory at Vitality Stadium.

In a clash low on clear-cut chances, substitute Orellana broke the deadlock 18 minutes from time with a spectacular effort which gave substitute keeper Aaron Ramsdale no chance.

Eddie Howe’s men had previously seen off Estoril, Portsmouth and QPR in warm-up clashes but Valencia – who finished 12th in the Spanish top flight last term – represented a step up.

The hosts struggled to break down an organised defence and Orellana’s rocket proved the only moment of genuine quality.

Howe included in his starting XI full-backs Adam Smith and Brad Smith after they recovered from thigh and hamstring injuries, respectively.

Benik Afobe missed out due to illness but England international Jermain Defoe was selected to start, as were the frontman’s fellow summer signings Asmir Begovic, Nathan Ake and Connor Mahoney.

There was no shortage of quality in the Valencia line-up with Italian Simone Zaza, Spaniard Rodrigo and Portuguese Joao Cancelo – all capped at international level – earning starting spots.

Following a minute’s applause for Cherries’ youngest league debutant – Jimmy White, who died earlier this week – the match got under way.

And the visitors made their presence felt in the opening moments when Zaza and Vezo steamed in with robust challenges on Dan Gosling and Defoe, respectively, which went unpunished by referee Lee Probert.

Valencia fashioned two openings in the first 15 minutes. First, Begovic swept up the danger after Rodrigo had sent a left-wing delivery towards Zaza, before skipper Dani Parejo’s near-post corner was nodded a fraction over by Javi Jimenez.

Midway through the half, Adam Smith and Mahoney combined well down the right flank and the latter’s out-swinging cross was smacked off-target by Defoe, who had darted expertly into space.

Later, Parejo’s clumsy challenge on Mahoney gave Cherries a free-kick on the right side of the area. Fraser whipped in but Steve Cook did not get a clean connection on his header and the ball drifted wide.

Parejo nearly had a good chance but the ball would not drop favourably for him, while Harry Arter’s deflected strike looped kindly into the arms of goalkeeper Neto.

Moments before the interval, Rodrigo was again let loose down the left but his dangerous low cross was cleared to safety.

Valencia made six changes for the start of the second period but Howe elected not to shuffle his pack as rain briefly fell at Vitality Stadium.

Substitute Alvaro Negredo was not far away from breaking the deadlock 13 minutes after the restart, the former Middlesbrough and Manchester City man forcing Begovic to parry smartly from 22 yards out.

Nacho Gil should have tested Begovic after being sent clear with a lovely pass from Parejo but he dallied too long and Cook scampered back to make a crucial block.

On came youngsters Ben Whitfield, Matt Worthington, Harry Cornick, Ollie Harfield and Ramsdale, while the visitors threw on four new faces.

And one of Ramsdale’s first acts was to see the ball flash past him. Negredo won the ball from Dan Gosling and play was quickly switched from right to left. Then Orellana dived inside and an unleashed an unstoppable effort which floated beyond Ramsdale’s reach and into the far corner.

With seven minutes left, Arter did his best to level, only for his emphatic thump from distance to rise into the Steve Fletcher Stand.
