Consequences of a badly-run business
 |
| DOWN: Kevin Bond |
IF Kevin Bond looked nervous as a kitten as the team bus pulled into Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon, then the Cherries boss was experiencing the come-down of last-day adrenaline come 5pm.
As Bond watched his players, described by the manager at the end of the 1-1 draw with Carlisle simply as "heroes", crash through the League One trap door after six successive victories, he could have been forgiven for running on empty.
Instead, Bond, shoulders forward and eyes watery, found something from somewhere after an afternoon of draining drama in Cumbria. And Gloucestershire.
With fellow strugglers Cheltenham shocking high-flying Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at Whaddon Road, a point was not enough as Cherries joined Gillingham, Luton and Port Vale in League Two next season.
Bond's battlers were forced to come from behind at Brunton Park after Scott Dobie had put John Ward's Cumbrians in front after 58 minutes.
But substitute Brett Pitman, making his 100th Cherries appearance, gave Bond hope 10 minutes later when he volleyed past Cumbrians keeper Keiren Westwood after being played in by Sam Vokes.
But, despite a handful of chances to snatch the points and secure their safety, it wasn't to be for Bond's men.
The emotional Cherries boss told the Echo: "Finally, finally what has happened to the football club over the past few years has finally caught up with it and these are the consequences.
"We needed it to be our day and it wasn't.
"The players are definitely heroes. I think they've done wonderfully well and they can be really, really proud of themselves.
"But it doesn't stand for anything. It's all about winning games and, yes, I am proud of them, but at the end of the day it doesn't mean anything in football terms because we've gone down.
"Having been so near, it doesn't make me feel any better.
"I couldn't feel any worse. At this moment in time, it's just the worst feeling. It's desperately, desperately hard to take."
As if relegation itself wasn't enough, Bond was left to rue several questionable decisions from referee Michael Jones, with the Cherries boss convinced his side should have had a penalty after Maxi Gradel's 55th-minute shot appeared to strike Grant Smith on the hand.
Dobie, meanwhile, looked to take his opener in an offside position on television replays.
Bond added: "I spoke to the players before the game and I knew they would have a go because they're a good set of lads and they had the bit between their teeth.
"I knew we would give everything we'd got. What I didn't know was that it wouldn't be our day and it needed to be.
"We'd earned the rub of the green that we'd had in recent weeks but today we didn't get it.
"One shot hit the crossbar and came out and we weren't ready for it and then another has gone across the face of the goal.
"From where I was, their goal looked offside and it looked to me like the referee was just waiting to give it but couldn't find a reason to.
"He was looking at the linesman and the linesman was looking at him and it also looked to me that on another day, we would have had a penalty."
Looking further ahead, Bond said: "It is going to be a hard summer. We've got a number of players out of contract and we've got to try and attract new players to the club. We're down a division and there is a possibility of another points deduction. That's not being negative, I'm being realistic.
"The players have all shown they can handle the level we are at and I'd be disappointed if they weren't ambitious.
"I want them all to stay, don't get me wrong.
"I'll try my level best to get them all to stay, but some of it is out of our control.
"Attracting new players here will be more difficult than it normally would be because of everything that has happened.
"I'm not sure at this moment in time what kind of money can be thrown at the team, but the club has got to stop the buy now, pay tomorrow' mentality. It can't be run like that.
"Hopefully Jeff Mostyn is the man to take the club forward and hopefully he will be and he is not going to run the club like that.
"The club isn't going to live beyond its means, which I totally agree with.
"We won't just be able to have what we want to have. We'll have to run a tight ship."

Having been to the game on Saturday and seen a brave performance from what is a League 1 outfit, I am confident things will turn round on the pitch. The crowd on Saturday was brilliant, a bit crowded compared to the season before but what an atmosphere!!!
I have read with disgust all the doom and gloom merchants on this site and now feel its time to have a say.
1. Mostyn may not be everyone's choice but he is prepared to stick his neck out for us, Stop all the backstabbing it isn't clever to keep on the slating a man who is keeping us afloat with his own cash.
2. Bond has improved as manager and will continue to do so. True, we have struggled since he took over, this was the case before he came and he has now got a few players who in time will be a strong nucleus if we keep hold of them.
3. It is obvious to me that a fair proportion of the backstabbers on here are not ture fans despite what they say. Yes i agree you can have your say, but to keep saying the same thing week after week is pointless. If you had the money to buy the club, would you? If you didperhaps we would respect your opinions.
4. The idiot who wrote on here from Sandbanks, yesterday, go back to wherever you cam from. Slugs like you aren't required.
5. Next season will be pivotal, if we get a points deduction we will have to play out of our skins but I am sure we can do it.
6. To all true Cherries fans, keep going through the turnstiles next season, we always need the money, let not go back to 3,000 gates of the 1970's when I first started going to DC. I may live up north but still try to get to a few games and next year will be at Bury, Accrington, Chesterfield and Morecambe.

'...Consequences of a badly-run business..'
Says it all.
A selection of just some of the above:
1) paying to much for the ground in 97.
2) paying to much for a new ground.
3) running own concerts.
4) running own catering/hospitality
5) underselling off field contracts.
6) selling players cheaply.
6) ludicrous S&L of ground.
7) takeover by 2 people who never had enough money from day 1.
Jeff needs to swallow his pride and contact (his words) '...people waiting in the wings with more money than I....'(sic)
Unless properly funded ownership is sorted in the next few weeks then next season could be a mirror image of this one.

eilxed in lancs, Bury on. If only a third of the comments posted on this site were as positive as yours we would be half way up the division in league two even before we started. Everyone has the right to express their opinion in any way they wish but some of the negative comments I have read immediately after Saturday’s game make me feel very sad. I do hope that despite the financial situation there will be some very careful thinking before players are sold or let go. I will be buying a season ticket and cheer on the lads. It is at times such as these that some of the 30,000 who went to Wembley some years ago and Cardiff more recently should examine their motive for going and come out and support their local team now when it needs it most. Come on the cherries!

One questions their motives and whether they are interested now we are in a lower league.Of course 6 of the 7 points raised refer to previous owners and 5 contradicts 4. The final point I would make is that attempts have been made and talks have taken place between the consortia, instigated by Messrs Mostyn and Sly, who seem to be the only ones really interested in the Club and prepared to put money in.

[bold]If Mostyn (Chairman of the Board) is such a generous benefactor then why did he not pay HMRC the money AFCB owed? (Taxpayers money)[/bold]
If Mostyn had paid we would not have gone into administration, lost ten points and now are in Div 2!
Mostyn could have held off the other creditors until the end of season and then decide to go into administration, we would then still be in Div 1 and have all season to pull back 10 deducted points.
Was our future mapped out long ago and resulted in the club being worth a lot less for purchase???

Badly run business off the field, for years, totally agree.
But this season the badly run business on the field, prior to the recent truly magnificent results which are down to the players not Bond, did not help the badly run business off the field.
Dropping crowds because of poor performances. Very poor signings of tired old injury players who pumped up the wage bill but did not contribute when on the pitch or mostly sat watching in the stand.
Hold your hand up Bond you are a very big part of the mess. Unfortunately we can't afford to dump you but oh how I wish that you had the decency to walk when the time was right. The future under Bond is not inspiring.

Whilst I have always believed that free speech is sancrosanct and everyone should be able to express their opinion, Iam frankly disgusted at some of the twisted comments posted on this site. It almost persuades me of the need for some kind of censorship or control by The Echo.
Having said that,my simple view is that Kevin Bond is a far better manager now than when he first joined us having been through the hell and fire of the past year. The club should make every effort to keep him and if we do away with this dire negativity from some 'supporters' who have had their say about past events, next season could see a quick return to Division One.
A little respect for Messrs Mostyn & Sly (whom I have never met) would also be appropriate.

Ok he maybe the only person or maybe not and all this was a fix and understand that he has tried to do anything and everything and wont give up but it's his poor poor business decisions and along with not having much money to run a club too = bad news.
I don't want us to go into league 2 with same situation and if we make it up we will probably enter admin again and go back down unless correct decisions are made.
It will be interesting to see how much they charge for tickets next season.

Great support, all those who are sticking the knife in, we will have a bright future with that kind of attitude, there is not one of us who really know what is happening, or what is going to happen and yet some of you are already writing the club, the team, the manager and the future off, we missed out by one goal from league one football again next season and yet you would think we were the worst team in the country, I just cannot believe what I am reading, a week ago they were all hero's it's just beggars belief.

As we know a lot of football clubs are built on an unsustainable business model. BSkyB paid £1.3 [bold]BILLION[/bold] to show premiership games for 3 seasons which I personally think is an obscene amount of money when many clubs in the lower leagues are struggling to stay afloat.

The only way forward is a clean sweep of the old board and Bond. They failed , the season is about all the games played not the last seven. Mostyn`s ego will be his downfall and how can anyone step forward when they have to pay him , no one want`s too. Did you here Mostyn on Radio Solent after the game he was talking like the new owner, stating what he was going to do starting from today.
Excuse me Jeff , you are only the preffered bidder you have not bid yet and you are no different to anyone of us, a fan ?
I certainly do not want a silly man like you making silly decisions AGAIN.
IF AND WHEN YOU OWN OUR CLUB THEN SURE DO WHAT YOU LIKE BUT UNTIL IT HAPPENS KEEP YOUR LITTLE GRUBBY HANDS OFF.

I am sure that Mr Mostyn has several plans for several scenarios with several backers so as the song goes "don't worry about a thing" cos we'll be back in League 1 before you know it.

Something different.
