Winning end to troubled first year
 |
| Jeff Mostyn |
AT least Jeff Mostyn and Steve Sly had one pleasant surprise on the first anniversary of their controversial takeover.
A year of turmoil was brought to a close with a deserved victory as the consortium marked its first birthday in celebratory circumstances.
It was hardly a classic, more socks and hankies than expensive train sets and iPods.
But showering Mostyn and Sly with presents will have been the last thing on the minds of long-suffering Cherries fans following a disastrous 12 months.
It started promisingly when shareholders gave the pair their overwhelming backing after Mostyn had publicly declared that his consortium offered "the last known hope for this football club".
On the pitch, successive wins over Millwall, Tranmere and Rotherham provided the foundation for boss Kevin Bond to chart a path to League One safety.
The early signs were encouraging and sights were set on promotion following a summer rebuilding of the squad and a behind-the-scenes shake-up.
Best laid plans and all that.
Optimism soon turned to despair as a miserable start to the season saw Cherries plummet to the foot of the table by the end of September.
Their cause was not helped by a glut of long-term injuries, while a calamitous nine-match winless run of home league games did little to inspire the Dean Court faithful.
With the team struggling, Cherries' new owners then managed to rocket to the top of the PR own goal league, a position they have occupied for much of an instantly forgettable season.
The shutters came down as the club's loyal, paying customers were starved of information. No news was bad news as Mostyn and Sly's reign lurched from one crisis to another, amidst a barrage of negative publicity.
Administration brought the whole sorry affair out into the open, with Mostyn and Sly receiving widespread criticism after it was revealed their initial investment had been by way of loans rather than share capital. This saw them crowned - by some considerable distance - champions of the PR own goal league.
Even Cherries administrator Gerald Krasner has caught wind of the ill-feeling towards Mostyn, describing him last week as "not everyone's favourite person", after unveiling his new consortium as the successful bidder for the club.
Supporters again voted with their feet on Saturday with the visit of Yeovil attracting fewer than 4,000 home fans among an attendance of 4,145. In the two previous seasons, this fixture drew crowds of 7,285 and 7,989.
The derby came just two days after Mostyn and Sly, together with Marc Jackson and "a host of corporate/football strategy partners", had had their bid for the club accepted, in principle, by Krasner. The whereabouts and identity of the fourth member of Mostyn's consortium, outlined by Krasner at a press conference just a week earlier, still remains a mystery.
Although the recent past is unlikely to be quickly forgotten by Cherries supporters, if Jackson's blueprint for the future is to prove successful, good times could be on the horizon.
The 46-year-old international businessman insists that Cherries will turn to youth in an attempt to make an instant return to League One next season, should they ultimately slip through the trap door.
And on the evidence of Cherries' victory over Yeovil, Joe Roach would appear to have given Jackson the perfect platform.
For their not inconsiderable part, Mostyn and Sly should be commended for sticking with the youth policy when scrapping it could have saved a few quid in the short term.
No fewer than seven members of Bond's squad could have lined up in Cherries' 3-0 win over Youth Alliance rivals Bristol Rovers at Chapel Gate on Saturday morning.
Five filled the substitutes' bench, while Brett Pitman, who still qualifies as an over-age player, and Sam Vokes combined for Cherries' second goal against the Glovers.
Unlike the first team at the start of this season, Roach's charges have prospered in times of adversity, with second place in their league testament to the work of an unsung and economically-funded youth department.
Believed to have one of the lowest budgets in England and heavily reliant on Brockenhurst College and the Hampshire Learning Skills Council, in Vokes, the scheme has produced one of the most sought-after strikers in the country.
And Yeovil's slim hopes of gate-crashing Mostyn and Sly's party were put to bed once the teenager had plundered his 11th goal of the season by heading home Pitman's 32nd-minute cross.
Jackson, who was among the crowd, said he had been "encouraged" by the display and described Vokes, Danny Hollands and Jason Pearce as "superb".
He added: "I thought it was a great performance and I thought they played with a lot of heart. It shows we can compete. When you look through the leagues and see the teams that are really playing well and competing, probably 60-per-cent have predominantly younger players, especially in the Championship and below."
Cherries took the lead after Hollands had started and finished a move in the ninth minute. After he had swept the ball wide to Maxi Gradel and the Ivorian's shot had been blocked, Hollands arrived to plant a crisp right-foot shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Yeovil - who were taunted with chants of "you're going down with the Bournemouth" and "can we play you every week?" - squandered two glorious chances to level, with Scott Guyett heaing wide of a gaping goal and Simon Church lifting his shot over the crossbar.
Referee Gavin Ward turned down a strong penalty appeal after Terrell Forbes's gloved hands had blatantly shoved Jo Kuffour in the back before Vokes's effort all but killed off the hopelessly out of form visitors.
The pick of the second-half chances saw Scott Flinders parry Pitman's strike, while Cherries goalkeeper David Forde produced a save for the cameras to push Lloyd Owusu's header over the crossbar and also superbly clawed away a Jean Francois Christophe effort.
Despite his team's abject display, Yeovil boss Russell Slade seems to know where their deficiencies lie: "We don't score enough goals, we've got to have more conviction in the box and we've simply got to tighten up at the back."
Who was it who once said it is a simple game, complicated only by players?

Pointles having such a good youth scheme if you don't give em experience. These last games of the season are excellent opportunities for these young players. Perhaps one of the first actions for Mr Wilson who is so keen on youth would be to get a Manager that will recognise them.

Once the season is beyond us I agree then that would be a good idea but I can't see it happening before then.

A very good article which once again demostrates that Mostyn and Sly have lost any credibility that they first may have had when they promised to invest £750 k then stole the Trusts golden share , thus getting the club for nothing. How can a man who deceives his own fans be trusted ever again ? We are in the position that we are by his bad management , he and Sly have been making all the decisions that have meant that we are relegated. Come on all Cherries fans enough is enough lets tell them how we feel and remove them from OUR club before we end up in the Conference League.
I can assure you that there is someone waiting in the wings if things go wrong with the M & S rip off.
The mystery man mentioned is real and did talk to the Solicitor acting for Krasner to which Krasner admited too in his press conference (see transcipt ) Mostyn was approached and offered a get out of jail card but refused as it meant he would not be Chairman and he would personally lose financially. It appears that the creditors can lose their money but not him. The shortage of people putting offers forward is not suprising because it would be pointless. The EXCLUSIVITY (not semi) Mostyn put in plcae stops anyone bidding , forget Krasners witty answers he knows who is right and his scaremongering tactice over losing 15 points will be reported to the Football League and the FA. Always have faith and vote NO to the CVA and fight to get these deceitful out of Dean Court. They or the new members arriving daily have no credibility or FINANCE to take this club forward. We need the guy from the Midlands who is a Millionaire and lets respect his business attitude of not wanting to give M & S their blood money. I am certain if the CVA fails he and maybe others WILL come forward.

I see Marc Jackson has now morphed into "an international businessman" - did he sell an copier to a garage on the Isle of Wight?
If this were not happening to our club it would be a good source for a comedy - having our own answer to David Brent on board. I have looked into his background - I suggest all cherries fans do the same.

The Midlands guy is real, is thought to be worth 100 million and is moving to the New Forest.
And Krasner does know who he is, for one he sent him the confidentiality agreement and two, he sat next to him at Leeds!
How can Mostyn and Sly still keep up the pretence that they are the only people interested in the club? Will Krasner scrap the confidentiality agreements and allow all the interested parties to come out into the open?
Or are we going to have to risk voting down the CVA to get the deal that would put our club in the hands of a real investor.

Good to see McQuoid getting 90 seconds or so on Saturday. Just the sort of experience he needs to be a vital cog in the machinery next season!!!
Looking at Crewe's run in, they can realistically expect a further 8-9 points, meaning we need to score 20 more from 8 games to avoid the drop, far too big an ask for any club in our situation, even without taking into account KB's tactical frailties.
I can see the scenario already, KB to hold back the young players for the next 4 games until we are mathematically down, then blood them in the last 4 games of the season when playing for nothing. At the end of the season, he will then claim it was only the 10 point deduction that took us down, even if we are more than 10 points adrift (as playing the younger players has allegedly cost us points in the final games, which we would otherwise have miraculously have won comfortably). This will give Mostyn the excuse to give his boy another year in charge, which should guarantee at least 2 years in League 2, or worse.
Don't get me wrong, I am genuinely pleased for the lads to win on Saturday, but also genuinely sick of the inept leadership we have seen at DC for much more than the last year. Bond has by far the worst record of any manager still in their job in the football league, which in itself speaks volumes. We can only hope that this Marc Jackson (or the other 'mystery' investor) are not the personification of evil that some have made them out to be and that they can effect real change at the club.

I am just concerned about Mr Jacksons comment stating that we should rely on youth to get us ot of league Two next season.
Anybody with half a footballing brain will know that young and inexpreienced players will get kicked all over the park in League Two as many sides in that division put very little emphasis on actually playing football!!
We will need plenty of experience and steel to get out of that division. The current playing staff
is simply not strong enough physically to make an impact. I am afraid the John Benson days are back!!
Secondly, I am still mystified by Mr Mostyn's comment that we have a bright future!!
Ther is NOTHING BRIGHT about lanquising in League Two with little hope of getting out of it at the first attempt.
There is NOTHING BRIGHT about the likelyhood of getting turned over at places like Morcambe and Accrington.
There is NOTHING BRIGHT about watching long ball kick and rush (alledged football) and seeing the ball coming down in the penalty box covdered in bird dung!!
There is NOTHING BRIGHT about the liklyhood of not being able to attract quality players to the club in view of relegation.
I fear that unless we pull our fingers out and show a little more urgency about the fact that we are now a League Two side we will wind up in the PINK CIRCLE FORD SECOND HAND SPARE PART LEAGUE!!
Regards

Bond will have to play the youth if Young and Cummings are both out unless he plays bradbury at the back along with that ex southampton rubbish.
I am looking forward to receiving my creditors letter as i am a season ticket holder and i will be going to the meeting.

"this all stinks" & "fartycat" - such rumours have been around this club for years. How can we be expected to believe them and that these people have the clubs best interest at heart if when they have a chance to bid for the club they don't.
A bid, even if it failed, would have proved they existed and had some funding behind them. Without that everything is just based on rumours again.

What I am saying is that the mystery man allegedly contacted Mostyn and Sly about a joint deal with him as Chairman / main invester putting his monies into the club instead of in Mostyn`s pocket. Mostyn / Sly , alledgely wanted a million to walk away. They did not want to be just on the board. Mostyn want`s the ego trip, no money to invest but he loves being Chairman. I repeat the fact that there is a EXCLUSIVITY in place there is NO point in anyone bidding against Mostyn. Hence NO bids, please try to understand that.
The man from the Midlands WOULD invest and does have the clout to do this. The fact that at the moment its pointless to go public and the papers he signed does not mean that he will soon go public because when the time is right he will. WATCH THIS SPACE.

Not much to celebrate as far as I can see.
Probably the most depressing year in the 25 years I've been supporting AFCB.
Still not going back until Bond has gone and the pitch is back to 'normal' size, so it could be a long time.......if there's a club left by then.
Sad thing is that I've lost all interest in going anymore. Shame as I was looking forward to taking my son in a few years when he's old enough to sit through a match...

when are some people going to wake up, we are always being told of this mysterious millionaire but I am afraid this is all pie in the sky, we are told this by the same people who wanted to hold on to the golden share which has probably cost us the chance of finding a decent buyer in the past, these same people who always tell us that there is always an alternative to what is happening but never come up with any workable solution, we all have our views on Mostyn and the way he appears to have gone about his business, but until someone actually comes out of the closet and puts his money where we can see it I am prepared to take what I can see although I may not like it, so come on lads either put up or shut up

You were told a year ago that Mostyn was not what he appeared to be ( a invester) and yet you did not believe it. Study the facts , Krasner stated that his Solicitor was talking to another interested party. Who was that then ? When will you wake up and understand it was pointless anyone bidding . Mostyn stiched it all up , a master plan that can only fail if he loses the CVA (twice). Jackson got no money Green a joke and Sly fits his name. Do you want them in charge of our club ? M & S have put us where we are now , they are clueless . This MILLIONAIRE will surface when he can and that will only be if the CVA fails . BELIEVE.

"this all stinks" - just because somebody is talking does not mean they are serious investors - proof is in actions. 16 confidentiality letters sent out - one bid - on the face of it only one serious group although most of them may have "talked" at some point.
Also who is "Green"?
Your credibility is poor when you blame M&S for our position - this position has built up over ten years - not just in the last twelve months.
Have to say I believe much of the grief directed toward M&S is more to do with poor playing performances and the retention of Bond rather than due to financial management.

New Forrest Phil..
16 got the letters Mitchell / Cohen etc walked away but......
Krasners Solicitors were talking a lot to one other (again). Read the first paragraph of the Conference Transcript (again).KEEP THINKING EXCLUSIVITY.
Mr.Green is the 4th penniless member of the consortium, another nobody.
M&S are to blame. They kidded the Trust into giving them the Golden share. They miss managed the club this season. Did they pay any creditors ? ask the Tax Man ? Motyns figures appear to be on the back of a fag packet ?
It appears Mostyn and Sly could not lie straight in bed , so people may even call them crooks , not me but others maybe ? I also think that they have a problem adding up their figures ? Finally who employed his neighbour Mr Kevin Bond ? was it Mostyn . I rest my case ( jeff)

all you tits that say no to the cva are completely off your rocker! how can you call yourself supporters when you want us to start next season with minus 15 points or even worse not have a club at all. there is no mystery man, get over it. any mystery man had the chance to put in a offer and if it was good it would have got accepted. and also what a load of rubbish about he cant come forward because he has signed a confidentional document, that dosnt stop yourself from revealing your name, it just means you cant talk about any offer. get over it. there is no one else willing to buy the club because they all no after looking at the books that the club makes no money, and the only people stupid enough to take the club on is big supporters of the club like mostyn and sly. so get behind them because there the best we've got.

To AFCB/8/2/83
Please understand that there is nothing in writing at the Footbal League stating any club not getting a yes vote to a CVA loses any points let alone 15 points. Krasner is scaremongering and you will find that he will be in deep water with the Football League over his tactics. Ring the League and ask them.
You also don`t understand business practise and the meaning of EXCLUSIVITY , i don`t wish to be rude but it means just what it says , Mostyn could not be challenged , he is driving the Bus , for now. Please also understand that he planned everything from day one. Stealing the shares etc and maybe he`s even got a done deal with Sam Vokes. It all stinks and could be corrupt. As for Mostyn being a fan, you are having a laugh , he loves himself and his position , he`s a Man City fan. Wake up vote No.

Mostyn and Sly arrived at the club and said they would turn the club around by running it 'as a buisness.' If they had done that and failed it wouldnt be so bad but all they did was run the club down for their own benefit with one eye on Admin from the start and even had the nerve to make false statements to the supporters trust and claim they were buying shares when in fact it was a loan. They engineered a situation whereby nobody in their right mind would get involved in either bidding or joining them. Mostyn appointed an administrator who the very next day went public and unethically stated how Mostyn had saved the club single handedly over the last year, which, in the absence of accounts is impossible to prove. Also, during that year no creditors were paid hence the current position which leaves the question of matchday receipts. If nobody was being paid where has that money gone? I suspect its found its way back to Mostyn, forever lost in the admin puzzle, thus rendering his 'financial support' meaningless. They have been unethical, innapropriate and fabricated facts and statements to suit themselves. The reason people are fed up with them is not because of results or Kevin Bond(although that doesnt help), they are fed up because they can see the club stuck with exactly the same problem theyve had for 25 years...mismanagemen
t, ego and greed. The saddest part of all this is it was a fantastic oppurtunity for AFCB to move forward and put the past behind them but as only could happen at AFCB we couldnt even do that right. I'm voting against the CVA is because even if the club went bust we'd start again on crowds of 1000 on a sunday morning at Duck Lane and rise through the leagues and be better off for it by cleansing the club of the pigs with their snouts in the trough.

To AFCB/8/2/83 Please understand that there is nothing in writing at the Footbal League stating any club not getting a yes vote to a CVA loses any points let alone 15 points.
I happen to agree with everything this all stinks is saying.
WATCH THIS SPACE.[/quote] Unless you are this man who you quite clearly know, what is stopping you from saying who he is, you are not bound by the agreement are you?

well said lymocherry, too many people saying an awful lot of nothing abouth the mythical millionaire with little or no evidence to back it up, I am sure that all true fans although not completley happy with whats gone on are equally fed up with the same group of so called fans completley against everything that Mostyn does, and to even thing about voting agains a CVA agreement shows a complete lack of concern for the club, for the first time in many years we may have a chance to go forward, it is up to nthe supporters trust to meet with Mostyn and put the fans fears to him with lack of communication being a prime concern, it is evident that certain individuals posting on this site have their own personal agenda and these people should be ignored these are the same people who for many years tried to hold the club back by holding on ton the golden share and ruining any chane that someone would come along and buy it, whether we like it or not it takes money to run a football club, and supporters groups never will have that kind of money available, forget personalities and vote for what we hope will be for the good of the club

all stinks, whilst I would agree that communication has been very bad, Mostyn and Sly have at least put money up front and by my standards and I presume yours they are wealthy, if in your case this is not so why are you bleating about them just put your money up, I cannot agree that the supporters trust was fiddled this was why they had two representatives on the main club board if these men could not be trusted to give an accurate report to trust board they should not have been there, I do agree that not everything has been done as I would like to have seen it, but with the debt that was weighing the club down (not due to Mostyn and Sly} they are trying to protect there own and the clubs interest, lets wait until their press conference see who else is involved and what promises they make and judge them on that, at that time we must work together and ensure that these promises are kept, we cannot keep living in the past but hope for a better future
