WARREN'S WOE
Warren Cummings
Warren Cummings

CHERRIES' slim hopes of avoiding the drop have been rocked further by the loss of key defender Warren Cummings for the Easter period.

Cummings is certain to be taken out of the firing line after aggravating a shin injury during Cherries' 2-0 victory over Yeovil on Saturday.

The 27-year-old defender had been playing through the pain barrier after a heavy blow split open his lower left leg at Luton last month.

Cummings, who had six stitches at Kenilworth Road, then suffered an infection and has played the past seven games with the wound heavily bandaged.

However, disaster struck when he took another whack to the damaged area after being caught by Marcus Stewart inside the opening seconds against Yeovil.

And despite managing to run off the discomfort to complete his 22nd successive appearance, Cummings was admitted to hospital for a minor operation on Saturday night.

He told the Daily Echo: "It opened right up again. We couldn't stop the bleeding and there would have been a big risk of another infection if I hadn't got it sorted.

"I thought it was starting to clear up but, after about five seconds of the game, Marcus Stewart caught me right on the spot where the stitches had been.

"I've had it cleaned up and it's been properly stitched. It's disappointing and although I'm only speculating, hopefully it shouldn't be any longer than 10 days."

Cummings played his part as Cherries kept alive their faint hopes of preserving their League One status with a facile victory over hopelessly out of form Yeovil.

But although first-half goals from Danny Hollands and Sam Vokes secured the spoils, Crewe's win at Gillingham left Cherries 11 points adrift of safety.

Cummings, who is likely to sit out Cherries' Easter double header against Gillingham and Tranmere, added: "I thought we were very solid and Yeovil never looked like troubling us.

"There's no point in looking at the table because we know we're still behind. We can only look if we get a few wins under our belt.

"We are professionals and have a job to do until the last game of the season, whatever is thrown our way. Unfortunately, we've been deducted 10 points and that's absolutely nothing to do with the players.

"I think it was a credit to everyone in the dressing room for the way we bounced back so convincingly following two successive defeats."

Cherries boss Kevin Bond, who was forced to name five youth team players on the bench, said: "Under difficult circumstances, the lads did exceptionally well.

"It was a great win capped off by two good goals and a clean sheet. On the balance of play, I thought we might have had more goals but I was thoroughly delighted with what we got because the lads gave a good account of themselves."

Bond added: "We can't do anything about the other teams, we can only try to affect what we do.

"If this keeps us in the hunt then that is probably as much as we can ask at this moment in time. It should give us a big lift going into our next game."

Look out for an emergency loan of a 35+ year old, long term injured defender in the next couple of days!

I totally agree with cherryfan and at this stage in the season we really should face up to the truth of where we are destined to be next season.

Blood the youngsters now and start building the foundations of a promotion winning season. We've got the talent but it needs some competitive, grown-up match experience.

It isn't going to happen, there is not a manager in the country that would blood these youngsters whilst there is still an outside chance of saving ourselves. I can't understand why there is now this demand on these young lads, they are not even full time pro's and you want them to play until the end of the season, it just wont happen.
Realistically with the injuries a couple might get a game or they will be on the bench but you can't expect them to make up the bulk of the team. There is no chance of us getting in any more loan payers under any circumstances that emergency only applies to the goalkeeper position because it is a unique one, so you may well get to see more of these lads than you think, I personally think it is asking too much of them whilst we are still in with a chance and why give up on the season until we have to.

I think the club should give an update on Anderton and Ryan garry not heard nothing official for some time?

Lymo, I think any one that lives in the real world knows we are down. If I thought there was a chance we could stay up then I would have not posted like I did. KB needs to join the real world and stop dreaming!

Lymo, the comment on the 35+ loan player was tongue in cheek!

Do not kid yourself we have any chance of staying up this season. Realistically, we would need 6 wins and 2 draws from the last 8 games (even then relying on others results as well), which simply will not happen. The young lads should be being blooded NOW, not to put pressure on them to win games, but to give them the experience needed to start next season at least a little experienced. I for one would much rather throw away 10 points or so this year blooding these young players, than lose points early next year getting the boys up to speed then. Given our tenuous circumstances, surely even Bond must see these players have to be a major part of the club's plans for getting out of L2. I'm not suggesting all of the youngsters should be on the pitch simultaneously, as that could well be counterproductive to their confidence, but they should all be getting some significant playing time during the last 8 games of the season, not 90 seconds after a game is already well won or lost.

It wont happen, that would be the manager admitting defeat this season, before we are mathematically certain, no manager will do that. The idea of playing the lads is fine but it will never happen under any manager until we are done for.

Lyocherry what are you saying here?

You seem to be arguing both ways at once.

We seem to have only 10 fit first team players (including an on-loan goalkeeper). Is there any option but to play the youth team players?

What I am saying is that through choice alone these players will not play but if there is no choice then one or two will get a game, it will not however be the numbers you are saying ie the bulk of the team, does that clear it up for you. It's quite simple really.

Kevvo will you stop complaining about Bonds greatest signing For the first half of the Season Russ didnt put a foot wrong in fact he hardly put a foot on the pitch. It is very difficult to come back from rigor-mortis and be the same player
