Cherries: Caretaker-boss Rofe rues 'crucial' first goal

CARETAKER-boss Dennis Rofe was left to rue seeing Cherries concede a “crucial” first goal as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Coventry today.

First-team coach Rofe took charge of team affairs at the Ricoh Arena following the midweek departure of management duo Paul Groves and Shaun Brooks.

And Rofe looked on as Cherries failed to stem the tide with David McGoldrick’s second-half strike condemning them to a fourth straight defeat and a place in the League One drop zone.

Rofe said: “I changed the formation and wanted to freshen up the boys. We had a game plan which, until half-time, had been working quite well.

“But there are fine margins between winning and losing. We had a few chances, which we didn’t take, and so did they. The game was evenly balanced at half-time but, unfortunately, we conceded a goal and it was possibly poor defending.

“I always thought this would be a tight game between two teams that, for various reasons, are probably at the wrong end of the league. The first goal was always going to be crucial and even more so today.

“If we had got it, it would have given our boys a bit of impetus and would certainly have knocked them. The nerves would have transferred to them and we might have grown in confidence. Unfortunately, they got it and we lost a bit of confidence.”

Rofe added: “I am sorry for the supporters that they have to again go home without a point to carry and I am sorry for the team because I thought the players put in real shift for me.”

Asked whether it had been difficult to prepare the players due to the turmoil, Rofe replied: “No, I don’t think it is difficult because, when you are in football, you get used to the events of this week.”

And asked what his immediate plans were, Rofe quipped: “I think the wife has got Chinese tonight!”

He added: “I was asked to take the team today and that is what I have done. The powers that be will decide what happens in the future.”

Coventry manager Mark Robins, who has seen the Sky Blues take seven points from four games since he was appointed last month, said: “If they had scored first, I think it would have been a big struggle because the game was flat from both teams. But there was no real heart-in-mouth time for us at all.”

“We were okay in the first half but a lot better in the second. We created a number of chances and there were a lot more pleasing aspects in the second half than there had been in the first.

“David McGoldrick must have been a fraction offside when he walked the ball into the net in the first half and I thought we may push on then and really open them up. The game was there for the taking.”

"Probably at the wrong end of the league." No probably about it, mate - Bournemouth are exactly where they deserve to be.

Accept for the fact that they are being payed peanuts and actually take pride in playing and have had a decent manager all season. whereas we have got a load of over paid players who don't care about playing and had a sh*t manager all season.

Give Rofe his due he got rid of the narrow diamond and we had wingers for a change.

Second half we never got to grips with the impact of their half time substitution and I can't really understand why Grabban came inside from off the right wing where first half he was quite dominant and put their left full back under a lot of pressure.

We lost it because of some poor defending by Elphick and Addison coupled with not taking our chances and you can't blame Rofe for that.

What's the odds on Rofe becoming our next manager. Knowing Mitchell, it will probably be worth a punt.

the whole team, and eddie mitchell need to go and watch poole speedway. He may learn how to run a sustainable and sucessful business over many years without the need to go bankrupt. A business developed on good man management, giving the supporters what they want. Also with a world champion in the team. congratulations to chris holder, matt ford , neil middleditch and all those that keep poole speedway succesful.Eddie forget the flash cars, and learn the basics

AFCB - the gift that keeps on giving. I worry that good managers may not want to work with EM - we need someone who can take full control of the team and who plays football (accent on the foot) according to our great tradition. Hoddle would be good, but I'm sure he'd have something to say about our defence's previous lives. Hoping for Coppell myself.

Not the best result but going to Coventry and expecting a win is really not on the cards, must have missed the last few weeks to think that was going to happen! The players need a leader and our support now, we are all in this together and if we are to climb the league, which I fully expect us to, it won't be with comments like some I am reading!! This was always going to be an awkward one, hopefully the new manager will be in place for our first home game without Groves, hopefully he will be a manager we all want and can get behind, then we can put this sorry start to the season behind us! Certainly not happy with the reports from yesterday, like I said need to put the league table up in the dressing room for all to see, it's not acceptable, but we need to give the players a lift, they need it!!

OK , so what Manager in his right mind would put up with Mitchell's conditions
1. I am allowed to come into the dressing room and give a team rant at any time
2. My experienced son will choose what players we buy
3. My son picks the team
4. You have to agree with everything I say or will get sacked
5. I can totally undermine you at any time and you must not complain

I cannot see many managers agreeing to the above!

I am more worried about the future of our club now than I was some years ago when we were close to liquidation. The situation is dire and I fear that relegation must be a major concern whoever is appointed manager, its vital that things improve dramatically.

We need to push the boat out and invest in the best quality manager, even if we pay him double what Groves and Brooks were on.
It is so important to have the right manager for more than the obvious reason of results. The extra costs paid to a decent manager would be quickly recouped by improved performances, climbing the league, maybe play offs or automatic promotion, increased revenue from increased crowds, players justifying their salaries and with improved performances their values would increase immeasurably (whereas at the moment, i can't think of many in the squad who would be worth what we paid for them). A good manager can take ordinary players and turn them into good ones.
Look at how good managers can transform a club....take Sunderland for instance....heading for relegation last season under Bruce until O'Neil took over. Moyes at Everton has kept them in premiership year after year against the odds.
In short....no cheap options please....get the best we can afford (or more) and he will repay us many times over. The cheap option spells disaster.

The one player who always gives 100% when he pulls on the shirt is Fogden!! Probably the lowest paid of the entire squad but he plays with a desire that is sadly lacking from others and yet he didnt even make the bench yeserday!!!.It was no coincidence that the great run away from home last season was largely due to his energy and determination,we need players with fight not inflated egos!!!

They have to start playing the players in their best positions. Play Grabbon on the right or McDermott, remember when first came to us and the excitement he brought to the team. Play McDonald in the centre, quality passer and creator. Play Cook and zubar in central defence, a great pairing that worked. Tubbs up front with possibly McQuoid or Demouge and forget using Fletcher for any reason because he bring nothing to the team except a peculiar tan for the time of year!
