Cherries: Groves laments poor display as pressure mounts on boss

BOSS Paul Groves admitted there had been a “desperation” about Cherries ’ display as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat against League One rivals Walsall today.

Cherries’ dire start to the campaign continued with only two points seperating them from the bottom four following a first reverse at Goldsands Stadium.

Andy Butler’s first-half header put them on the back foot before George Bowerman’s late winner won the day for the Saddlers after Charlie Daniels had levelled eight minutes from time.

Under fire Groves again ran the gauntlet of irate Cherries supporters with calls for his head reverberating around the ground following the final whistle.

He said: “I thought it was one of our poorest performances, certainly at home, in terms of our ability to pass the ball and to carve out openings. There was a desperation about the performance and that had not been the case in our previous games.”

Groves’s decision to replace Josh McQuoid with Josh Carmichael after 60 minutes was met by some home supporters with chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing”.

Explaining the switch, Groves said: “You are at home and you want to take the game to the opposition but we weren’t able to do that for the first 55 minutes. The change enabled us to have a little bit of momentum, not much, but it eventually got us a goal back.”

Groves added: “The supporters voice their opinions which they are entitled to do. For the majority of the time, the crowd stayed with it. They tried to get behind us from the off and, once things go against you, people voice their opinions which is natural.”

A group of supporters held a post-match protest outside the main entrance to Goldsands Stadium when further calls for Groves’s head were made.

Asked by BBC Radio Solent’s Andrew Hawes how tenable he felt his situation was in light of the protests, Groves replied: “It is not my decision. My job is to continue to work with the players and try to address the issues that we might have in terms of trying to play and trying to win some football matches.”

And asked whether he felt time was running out, Groves said: “You work hard, probably even harder and you try to find a solution. You just keep working and trying to improve as much as you possibly can.”

Fielding a question from the Daily Echo, Groves was asked whether chairman Eddie Mitchell had spoken to the players since the final whistle.

He replied: “The chairman came in and voiced his opinion at the end of the game which he is entitled to do. But that stays within the dressing room. He is entitled, at times, to voice his opinion in respect of what he feels and what he thinks and there is a time and a place.”

And asked whether he felt under pressure, Groves replied: “I think you put yourself under pressure (because) you want to do well. You go back to working even harder and putting in more time to try to turn things round.”

During his address to supporters following the final whistle, Mitchell described as “rubbish” Cherries’ past two performances.

I watched Warsaw bet Preston last week, they're a decent outfit, and their lge position doesn't lie! Richard O'Kelly Warsaw number 2, and you can tell he has learnt a lot from SO'D - Warsaw play some nice football. I can only think this football club is going to end in tears. Wages must be through the roof, and I can't imagine when the budgets were planned, they were forecasting 4k attendances! -

I do agree with all comments in respect of Groves and not forgetting Brookes.
However, I am concerned as to where there is any one else of any calibre who would be actually willing to come to ACFB and work with the Mitchells.

That's the problem isnt it. Whilst Mitchell is in charge, nothing will get better.

So it takes 55 minutes to realise that you can't take the game to the opposition? That's the root of the problem -you don't change any system until it's too late -even against a squad of youngsters whose total transfer costs were c£60 000!

Warsaw! Preston fans must be made up to know that they've qualified for Europe.

Just a clue:

Warsaw = Capital city of Poland.
Walsall = A dump on the edge of Birmingham.

Warsaw is a long standing Soccer AM joke. A favourite show for football fans on Sky.
.
Trouble is Grovesy, you just cannot understand how to structure a side to win a game, and your coaching set up only ruins players. No one has improved under you.
.
EM has stuck his neck out to support you and Brooks. He showed commitment in giving you a 3 year contract and backing you. There is no doubt that you have both let him down and no have no idea what to do from here.
And now he is being attacked in a way that no-one here can possible imagine having directed at themselves. All in support of you two.
Those that were quiet yesterday did not protest because they wanted to support the side, but it is perfectly cear to all that your leadership will only lead to relegation. Do not misinterpret that for supporting you.
I' m sure you're a decent bloke but you either need to show gratitude toEM for your opportunity and resign, or get someone in that can do the job for you (as Kevin Bond did with Eddie Howe).

I am numb. I can't believe what is being allowed to happen.
I thought we started well and unlike some I was impressed with the new guys. Fd is strong and powerful. His finish after the whistle had gone was impressive. Davids was omnipresent at the start but I suspect tired.
But after 20 mins I just sat there and lost interest. I didn't even celebrate our goal.
Paul groves. Teams go through poor runs. They go through bedding in processes. But in that time there are usually signs that things will improve. I can't see that here. We are getting worse. We know the fans are not with you. But it does not look like the players are either.
I want to go to the Ricoh next week but won't if you are still in charge. Too depressing.
Look at the situation. Do you really think you are the right man. Do the right thing.

Carsile Cherry, its funny you say that about RO'K as I was listening to the commentary on Solent yesterday and thought exactly the same thing.. I really fear for the 'football' playing side of the club, we just seem to have lost any footballing direction, i was so pleased when we equalised, only to **** it away with a minute to go, defensive frailties ... If i was in charge, I'd ring up Gordon Strachan and offer him the job, he did wonders at Scummers, and he's a no-nonsense no b/s manager. He's sort us out ... (short of my favourite Eddie /Jason combo)

If I win the lotto, I'll ring 'The special one' (aka Jose M and just get him on a plane, buy the club and kick laurel, hardy and Leatherface out) and let the good times roll
