Cherries: Laws insists under-fire Groves won't panic
7:00am Tuesday 25th September 2012 in Cherries News
By Neil Meldrum
FORMER BOSS: Brian Laws
BRIAN Laws has backed Paul Groves to emerge stronger from his Goldsands Stadium nightmare, insisting the Cherries boss will not push the panic button.
Groves has come under increasing pressure from a section of supporters after presiding over just one win from 10 games so far this season - despite the Dorset club having spent big money in a bid to realise chairman Eddie Mitchell ’s Championship dream Many travelling supporters called for Groves’s head as Cherries were thumped 4-0 at Swindon on Saturday, but Mitchell yesterday told the Echo that his under-fire boss would not be sacked.
And Laws, who managed Groves at both Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United, believes the 46-year-old can improve his wretched record since replacing Lee Bradbury in March.
Laws, a League Cup winner with Nottingham Forest in 1989 and 1990, told the Echo: “One thing that you have in management is rough times as well as the good times.
“Most managers will experience that because it can’t be |good all the time, but it is |about how you manage those situations and how well you take criticism.
“I’ve known Paul for many years as a player and a coach and one of the things I have seen is a strong character. He will take criticism and, when things aren’t going well, he will listen as well.
“I never saw him panic as a player and I’m sure he won’t now he is a manager.
“We all have difficult times and it is also about the players responding. It’s not all down to the manager.
“One thing the fans will see with Paul, though, is that he is very focused and he will do what he believes in, regardless of the outcome.
“He has signed lots of players but teams take time to gel. You are very lucky if you bring in a lot of players and they gel right away.
“With Bournemouth, there is an added pressure because they are not used to spending money and expectation levels have risen dramatically. With that comes pressure and the fans will let you know if they are not happy.”
Groves scored his 100th career league goal under Laws at Glanford Park in 2004, with Laws describing the former midfielder as “inspirational”.
The 50-year-old former Burnley boss added: “Paul is not going to be someone who loses it because he is very focused. As a player he was like that and he won’t be outspoken now he is a manager.
“Just because he is not like that, though, doesn’t mean he can’t endear himself to the fans. He needs the fans on his side, but I would never question his personality.
“Paul just needs time. He must be given that and, if he is, I am sure the club will reap the rewards.”

Echo - stop reporting this publicity being spun out of DC and start reflecting the views of the majority of the fans, "Groves must go". If this means that Echo is once more banned from DC then so be it, this would just be further evidence of the Mitchell clan's attitude towards the supporters.

We had a good local, passionate and successful manager in EDDIE HOWE until the Bricklayer made his life unbearable.

Why not interview some of the supporters who have watched all the matches so far this season?
Groves has had enough time (and the biggest budget by miles that any manager has had at Boscome). Groves had 113 matches in charge at Grimsby and 17 here. With just 27 wins in total, the career win rate is 22%.
Relegation was a fact at Blundell Park and it will surely arrive here too - if Groves is allowed to continue.

Before you spout any more claptrap about our club and its current personnel, perhaps you'd like to phone your old mucker Russ Wilcox, and get a bit of background regarding AFCB. I'm sure if you went public with what he has to say, it would make far more interesting reading.

If Groves is allowed to continue it's doubtful whether the Club will survive, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the gate on Saturday is below 4500, well below the break even point. I like many others am debating whether it's worth while continuing going to games at Dean Court, I have already moved from being a Season Ticket holder for many years to a Saturday (home)only spectator. But I have as yet to see a game during Groves period in charge worth the admission fee and find his "style " of play , dull, negative and boring, whilst I want to be entertained by watching flowing, attacking football. The Club has already "lost" over 40% of the support of Eddie Howe's days, as a result it must be in financial difficulties, haemorrhaging money and support, with an inflated wage bill and little or no financial control. I can only see this ending with the Club in administration again. Remember, that Max has only lent the money, is charging 6% interest - has a charge on all assetts and seems to be a peripheral figure - just how much real interest does he really have in the Club.

Hadn't realized that it's Harpbury College on Saturday, the probable Champions, and fielding the three ex internationals that they recruited on to their staff ( using tax payers money!! - that's a trick Mitchell has missed) Will certainly give Dean Court a miss on Saturday for Chapel Gate. An exciting attacking game in prospect, rather than another dreary display - no contest.
Instead, I will be watching Loughborough Students in an exciting game of National rugby for £4. If I want to turn the clock back and watch some great passing football under Sean O'Driscoll I may pop along to Forest one day
I will return to Dean Court when the current regime have moved on

The pros and antis will come out of the woodwork to make their case/views heard until then it seems to me that we will not make an iota of difference to EM PG or anyone else.
I will take leave of absence until there is major news worth commenting on because it has now become very silly.
Some of you may well be saying thank God for that (I know one in particular will miss my comments like smoke in his eyes!!). But I cannot bear it any more seeing the family club we have all loved and supported for such a long time being dismantled bit by bit by a demolisher.

I do'nt know if anyone would want to buy the club. We would certainly loose DC. God just writing thisreally hurts. Maybe to get our club back we would have to do an Aldershot. Anyone out there got 15m in there back pocket? coz money is the only way to get rid.

In some respects it’s a shame that another decent ex player in brooks has in-part resided over another managerial slump, in the same way that Quinn & to some extent Bond did.
We're 3-2(Howe & Tindall) down in the recent ex-players become decent managers/coaches stakes.

With the clowns we have in charge on and off the field we are on the flight path to implode.
There needs to be one hell of an improvement after the Swindon debacle but to be honest, much as I would like to see it, as I have followed the cherries all over the country since 1958, I can't see Groves turning things around.
Groves and Brooks should do the honourable thing and fall on their swords and resign.
