Cherries: Addison vows to pile more misery on Pompey
7:00am Friday 17th August 2012 in Cherries News
CAPTAIN-elect Miles Addison wants Cherries to go for the jugular when they open their League One campaign at crisis-hit Portsmouth tomorrow.
Addison, handed the armband by boss Paul Groves for the League Cup tie at Oxford in midweek, is again expected to lead Cherries into battle at Fratton Park (3pm).
And the combative defender knows Cherries must look to take no prisoners as they attempt to heap more misery on their beleaguered south coast neighbours.
Addison told the Daily Echo: “We have got to be positive and professional right from the start. Looking in from the outside, Portsmouth is not a happy place at the moment and we have got to take advantage of that.
“We have got a few experienced heads and the manager has been on at us all week. He has worked at Portsmouth and knows what they will be expecting.
“But I am sure Michael Appleton (the Pompey boss) will be telling them they can win. We have got to combat that and we definitely feel we should be able to sweep them under the carpet.
“Fratton Park is a great stadium and their supporters are brilliant. They have always been like an extra man to Portsmouth and I am sure they will be in great voice. But, if we can kill them off early and be professional in the way we go about our business, then the game could be over before they start.”
Boss Groves, who spent four years on the backroom staff at Portsmouth between 2006 and 2010, knows there will be no room for sentiment on his return.
He said: “It is a difficult situation for their manager and his group of players. We need to be professional and do our jobs.
“I worked at the football club so understand the difficulties people are going through. But I work for this football club now and we have got a job to do.”
Asked whether the turmoil at Pompey surrounding their playing resources had made preparation difficult, Groves said: “There is little you can do because there are so many question marks over players and ins and outs. We have just got to concentrate on ourselves and that is enough in itself at this moment in time.”
Groves is hoping to have midfielder Eunan O’Kane available for selection following his midweek exertions with Republic of Ireland under-21s.
New signing Tommy Elphick could also be in contention to start, while Shaun MacDonald faces a race against time to recover from a calf injury.
Cherries: (from) Jalal, Francis, Addison, Zubar, Daniels, Grabban, Arter, Partington, Pugh, Thomas, Tubbs, Fletcher, Cook, Gregory, McDermott, O’Kane, Elphick, MacDonald, Wakefield, Flahavan.
Pompey: (from) Eastwood, Dumbuya, McLeod, Harley, Howard, Rodgers, Walker, Clifford, Williamson, Djilali, Compton, Harris, Magri, Webster, Wallace, Butler, Andersen.

One thing is certain tomorrow - the atmosphere will be cracking! A crowd approaching 18000, a game many Pompey fans thought would never actually happen, and we know only too well how teams draw inspiration from adversity, having done our fair share! Logic says that a team who (in the main) have completed a full pre-season should be comfortable winners against a collection of cast-offs, most of whom have only been training with Pompey for a few days, but don't expect an easy ride. Pompey will put up one heck of a fight, and their "best fans in the world" will create an almighty din! UTC tomorrow, and good luck to PFC in their ongoing battle for survival, a battle which is still by no means yet over.

It was funny though when the entire Holte End in great voice told him where to stick his tuneless wind instrument! Wonder what happened to his cornet? Have only seen him with the infuriating bell in recent years!

What an embarrasement that game was - a gutless , insipid performance from our players and manager that day -and a totally dismissive attitude from them towards the thousands who travelled that day to watch us get trounced.
Anyone remember our last game at Pompey? Not a happy afternoon, that one! I believe the great enigma that was Wayne Fereday scored his one and only goal for us that day, while Whittingham single-handedly murdered us!

The authorities have bent their own rules and not deducted 10 points despite Pompey still being in administration. Add this to granting permission to sign new players whilst in administration and it looks like different rules apply for some.
(But I'm not bitter!)

I hope that Pompey do survive and prosper, the Club's history and supporters deserve to do so. I hope that we match them, are positive and deserve to take the points tomorrow. But it isn't going to be easy and we will have to shew better attacking flair than we have done so far under PG.. But am looking forward to the game, even though I am going with a Portsmouth based Cousin- who will really rub it in should we lose. May the better team win!

This is more a move to give them a chance to find a buyer and enable them to at least have a chance of winning and avoiding relegation. Should the first 5/6 teams playing them face a "team of boys" a buyer be found and good players recruited it could have a marked impact on the league and promotion/relegation
Latest news is that our first crowd chant of the season will have to change. "We've got more points than you!" is no longer an option. The authorities have bent their own rules and not deducted 10 points despite Pompey still being in administration. . Nice to see some "common sense" from the FL - it's a welcome change from the way other teams have been treated - including us!

.
In addition, Portsmouth are at home and they will have the steel and togetherness that administration always brings to a side in trouble. Plus the crowd will carry them through.
.
It is the sort of game that if we go a goal down it will be game over for us, we do not possess the steel and aggression to overcome this.
.
I am predicting a likely 1-0 or 2-0 defeat. If I am proved wrong then fair play, but there are too many factors stacked against us at the moment.
.
At the moment we cannot change things around in front of goal. We have too may light weights. We do not have a target man to change the shape of play in needed. Hence my prediction of a 1 or 2 nil defeat.
.
I am just wondering why nobody has answered my point as to why we have invested highly on quality player and NOT invested in a quality manager.//
.
How do we justify shelling out alledgedly 800k for Tubbs whilst alternatively one could have installed a quality manager on 100k for three years totalling 300k for 3 years!!!. Of course there will be add ons. It does make any sense.

Hoping some of our walking wounded can get fit before too much damage is done.
Seems there is a danger of carrying on where we left off last season but with new faces.

Cannot see us getting anything out of this game. We have too many injuries. We are too lightweight in front of goal. At Oxford we would not have scored if we were still playing there now!!.

II am not totally in agreement that we have lightweights up front. The current situation would not have been a problem for EH or a proven manager.
I don't like when players talks of 'piling more misery...' as you point out they will raise their game and come at us all guns blazing. Humility is far better than talk of hitting someone who is down.
