RYAN Garry believes Lee Hughes’s goalscoring record proves he can shut out the boo boys.
The Notts County frontman is likely to be greeted by a hot reception when his side visit Dean Court in League Two tonight (7.45pm).
Hughes sarcastically applauded a section of the North Stand following the Magpies’ 2-1 FA Cup second-round win in Dorset in November, after the former West Brom man had been roundly jeered with every touch.
But rather than put the 33-year-old off his game, Garry thinks 22 goals in 29 games for the Meadow Lane side demonstrates the forward’s ability to keep his focus.
Garry, who will be one of the men tasked with keeping Hughes quiet this evening, told the Echo: “The fans give him a little bit of stick, but if you look at his goalscoring record, it doesn’t look like it affects him.
“It may spur him on, or he might be one of those people who is unaffected by what goes on around him when he’s playing. I’m not really sure if the reception he gets spurs him on, but I don’t think it affects him, that’s for sure.”
Hughes notched the 150th league goal of his career as County edged to a 1-0 win over Grimsby on Saturday.
He also found the net during the FA Cup clash at Dean Court in November.
Garry added: “He’s up there with the best strikers in the division, the likes of Le Fondre, O’Grady and Dagnall.
“He’s played at a higher level and proved himself at a higher level as well. He’s got a lot of goals this season and he’s one of Notts County’s many strikers.
“In every game, you play against a striker who’s going to be a threat, and he’s no different.
“He’s one of those people that you have to watch for the whole game. We’ll keep as tight as we can to him and hopefully keep him as far away from the goal as possible.
“That’s how, ideally, you want to defend against any team – by trying to keep their strikers as far away from the box as possible. And hopefully limit the amount of chances they get.”
Cherries boss Eddie Howe is hoping for a similar effort from central defensive duo Garry and Jason Pearce, who coped well with Hughes when the teams met in November.
He said: “I thought we did well against him in the FA Cup game. I thought the two centre-halves were excellent against him earlier in the season and, with a similar performance, we won’t be too far away.”

I cannot bare to look at this horrid mad running around the football pitch.
He's paid for that crime, and probably relives it every day. yes he shouldnt be on a football pitch but he is, I cant stand the guy but if he was up front for us I wouldnt be disappointed (if he can get a place in team!!) He thrives off the jeers as he did in the cup game with that dance in front of the main stand. Pearcy wont let us down!!
