Cherries: Home form a real worry for Howe

BOSS Eddie Howe wants his Jekyll-and-Hyde Cherries charges to rediscover their killer instinct and creativity |at Dean Court – and fast.

Howe looked on as Cherries failed to break their 2010 home win duck after being held to a dismal 0-0 draw by League Two strugglers Cheltenham on Saturday.

The instantly-forgettable stalemate followed convincing away wins at Crewe and Rotherham as Cherries again came unstuck in front of their own supporters.

Howe, who felt his side had looked “leggy” and “lacking a spark”, was left to rue a missed opportunity as Cherries extended their winless home run to three games.

“It just didn’t happen for us in the attacking half,” said Howe. “We know we can do a lot better.

“We needed a bit more patience and guile to try to open them up. Some of our balls into the box were of a poor quality and we definitely didn’t test their goalkeeper enough.

“We got better the longer the game went on and played our best football towards the end when they were clinging on.

“But, for whatever reason, we’ve had similar problems at home in terms of opening up teams and creating chances. It’s something we need to put right quickly because the games come and go quickly.”

Howe resisted using mitigating circumstances as an excuse. Cheltenham arrived at Dean Court following an enforced two-week layoff, while Cherries were contesting their third game in eight days.

He said: “Cheltenham looked quite bright early on and, although you could put that down to a number of things, we’re definitely not going to use it as an excuse. We should have performed better than we did.

“I’m our worst critic and think we can do a lot better but there are reasons why we’re not performing at full speed in every game.”

However, Cherries’ mounting injury crisis forced Howe to field stricken pair Lee Bradbury (flu) and Steve Fletcher (back), while substitute Marvin Bartley managed only 28 minutes before he hobbled off with a recurrence of his calf problem.

Howe said: “Marvin was 100 per cent fit and I would never put someone on the pitch who may run the risk of doing themselves serious harm. I don’t want it to come across as an excuse, but we do have issues and a number of players are struggling.

“We reluctantly played Fletch because we felt that if he could give us a good 45 to 60 minutes, we would have had a better chance to win the game.”

Howe added: “Football doesn’t always run predictably or smoothly and I am sure there are going to be many more twists and turns.

“We were disappointed not to win because we felt we had a good opportunity to follow up two good away performances.”

I believe that the reason why we do better away from home is that the home teams (on average) play attacking football thus open up the game. Teams that come to Dean Court (with few exceptions) play defensive football thus make harder for us to break them down, add to that some poor refereeing and we end up with games such as Saturday’s. Eddie Keep up the good work and we will be there or thereabouts in May. Up the Cherries

It's simple, the Cherries haven't got the quality or skill in midfield to open up teams at home if they decide to sit back and defend. We only generally score on the counter attack, which is easier to do away !

Both the above posts are correct. We're a dangerous team away from home because the home teams let us play because the they are obligated to attack. When we are obligated to attack and break a team down we sometimes appear to be lightweight, which is quite possibly a result of a small squad being overused because of the embargo.

This a point that I have been making for some time, the loss through injury of Molesley and Igoe has hit us hard, when you add to that having to play a player with flu and another with a bad back, quite simply because there was no one else explains a lot. It could come to just having eleven players to choose from tomorrow. Eddie and the lads have proformed miracles this year to be where they are - but it could never last. Welcome to the FL's level playing field.

Can we look forward to tomorrow not back!
We are 2nd for a reason. Not due to a blip in form. We will drop more points before the end of the season. Lets stop the negatives now as I think we all would have taken 7 points from the last 3 games.
Good luck lads tomorrow.

It could never last, you are kidding aren't you?? 7 points from our last three games doesn't look like it's finished from what I have seen, no team in the top six or seven other than County seem able to put a run of games together, it's down to pressure, we are looking in a very healthy position. If we continue to win away and draw at home it still amounts to the same thing promotion and that would be an incredible result!!

Just think that Fletch and Brett need to play closer together and as the home team we need to start with a quicker tempo.

Wiggins playing left midfield with Cummings at the back could be the key tomorrow night to give us an attacking outlet down the left handside.

Come on the lads and let's clip those Magpies wings.

I agree about looking forward but I don't think we are necessarily looking backwards but merely making some observations. I am looking forward to tomorrow night and I am pleased that there will not be a colour clash as Saturday's. I think even our players must have thought twice before the passed the ball!!

I don't think we played attacking football on Saturday with Cheltenham, at least not until well into the second half.
Cheltenham attacked from the off and Cherries were forced into defending. Perhaps a good thing as Cherries played ninety minutes of football.
Lack of forward players is a problem forhte team.

Why not play Mostyn in midfield, he must be the most expensive 'player' in the clubs history.
