Cherries: Punished for having to clean up the Sport-6 mess

IT’S never a pleasant experience having to clean up someone else’s mess.

Especially when it apparently involves hundreds of thousands of pounds in unpaid tax and unpaid bills.

So you could forgive Eddie Mitchell and the latest incarnation of the Cherries boardroom for suffering a few headaches of late.

And anyone careless, or brave, enough to mention the words ‘Sport-6’ while roaming the Dean Court corridors should probably expect a tongue-lashing from Mitchell, Adam Murry or Jeff Mostyn.

As is always the case with Cherries, however, when one pressing issue is sorted, something else comes along to cloud the utopia.

So as Eddie Howe prepares to start the 2009/10 campaign on a rare even-playing field, the rookie boss’s nails are already down to the quick following a squad headcount that reveals just 18 players.

Howe is not asking for the world and if Mitchell’s sensible streak is anything to go by, he won’t get it, with the chairman insisting he won’t be paying for anything the club can’t afford.

And while Mitchell’s recent uncharacteristic silence over the club’s transfer embargo is both frustrating and ill-advised, until the Football League stops punishing a board for the mistakes of a previous regime, happiness will be in short supply up the road in Kings Park.

The league itself appears to care little about the level of disdain from supporters of teams in the lower divisions of English football and frequently chooses not to comment when questions are asked regarding punishments dished out to clubs already on the breadline.

Indeed, when asked by the Echo to comment on Cherries’ embargo, the league refused to confirm or deny an embargo even existed!

The simple facts are that, according to the board, the league’s demands have been met since the Murry Group’s takeover last month.

Indeed, it would appear that Mitchell, Mostyn, Steve Sly, Neill Blake and Murry have already achieved more in six weeks than Sport-6 managed in just under a year.

And that is why the league should now reward the new board by removing the barrier that is threatening to derail Howe’s first full season in charge before it has even begun.

Sure, if the finances start to go pear shaped once more, then re-instate the embargo to block any further deals during the January sales.

But one or two new faces, that could make the difference between mid-table mediocrity and a season that puts bums on seats and cash in the safe, is not asking for much and shouldn’t break the bank either.

History may well show that owners of AFC Bournemouth are incapable of paying the bills, so why should they make their situation worse by splashing the cash on new players?

But that is what it is – history. Mitchell et al appear to have, thus far, done everything asked of them.

And surely everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves. Don’t they, Lord Mawhinney?

  • You can do your bit by backing the Echo’s campaign to have Cherries’ transfer embargo lifted.

All supporters need to do is fill in today’s special back page petition and either drop it into the Echo offices on Richmond Hill, or send via post to Neil Meldrum, Sports Desk, Daily Echo, Richmond Hill, Bournemouth, BH2 6HH.

The Football League does nothing to support it's members. For that reason, not to mention the fiscal ones, is th reason it has no involvement in the highest strata of the game in this country.

It's always been an organisation dominated by coffin dodgers with no concerns other than lining their own pockets and what's for lunch.

We are suffering for the thieves and crooks of previous regimes, and have done for 19 years. Enough is enough.

Mawhinney, you are an ****! Stuck up in your own self important world. You have done so little for football, it's unreal!

To be fair to the Football League the rules being applied were voted in by the clubs themselves. However, having said that the League should recognise that the new owners are making every effort to get the club back on track following Sport 6. What the League should do is keep a black-list of incompetent Directors ie Savvy/Baker and make sure they have no further involvment in football in an official capacity.
Things look better with the League getting the info they need early next week (as per last nights club statement) so hopefully EH will get the go-ahead to get who he requires late next week after the League meeting. We'll have to wait & see. Just hope Steve Lovell & co are just as patient.

Whilst I applaud the Echo's new found backbone, it is a bit unfair to turn the attack to the Football League.

The rules are the same for all clubs and were voted in by the clubs. The rules themselves exist to protect the reputation of the game and to stop clubs using insolvency as a means to gain a competitive advantage on the field - something that would lead to disaster and the inevitable disappearance of clubs.

In fairness to the league's rules, they have been remarkably successful (and Conference clubs would argue too successful) in preventing the demise of their members - I think the last occasion was Maidstone.

Furthermore AFCB has gone through regular changes of ownership, each one blaming the one before for the unpaid bills including much owed to the taxman (ie us). I think the league are right to expect AFCB new owners (and I am sure they will have noticed the involvement of Mr Mostyn who never seems to have gone away) and expect them to prove themselves before they can expect much slack - after all if "mid table mediocrity" is all AFCB can afford for now, then for god's lets not gamble and put the clubs future at stake by going for broke.

Can someone tell me why The Echo are now prepared to say Sport 6 were 'creating a mess,' but ignored that mess and the criminality that went with it for a year? They were begged on this message board to get involved but chose to ignore the fans, even when it was discovered Savi trousered money the day he left and sold his shares behind Bakers back.

I find it sickening that this 'paper' now thinks it's clever to bash the new regime (who at least seem to be trying to be honest)when they chose to ignore the old one for as long as they were here.

This paper is nothing more than a parasite that leeches off AFC Bournemouth and I can't beileve I'm the only person that thinks it.

It is incredibly frustrating but this did not start with the takeover in June. Murry has been around since December. Presumably he has been in touch with the League long ago? Mostyn came back in early in the spring didn't he? And then Baker took over again? That is six long months with everyone bar Eddie Mitchell involved in the affairs of the club. Basically aside from the two Eddies I can understand how the others will find it difficult to convince that this is all "new" to them.

Surely during their period of "Due Diligence" they found out just how poor a state the Club's finances were in and the "mess" there was. If they were mislead, false figures were produced or they were lied to, then I would have thought that the Fraud Squad would by now be involved. If this is not the case and they went in to it with their eyes wide open, then it might have been wise to let the Supporters know just what a gargantuan task lay ahead of them, particularily, as it seems with limited resources. The majority, would and will understand if given the facts and a coherent strategy to try and resolve the many problems the Club has. Much of the "unrest" and concern of the fans would have been diminished had they been told, without pressure, the simple fact, that more information was required and being provided re the Embargo . It is important that supporters have confidence in the Board and in general are behind them. They, probably up to their neck in it and firefighting may well not have time for PR, why not use someone like Chris Emmis as a conduit to keep us advised of progress, I have no idea whether he would want such a job, but we know the efforts he makes ( and has made)to help the Club and he is trusted.Just trust your fans and they will reciprocate

Neil,

Maybe you have forgotten but.

1) Mostyn brought Sport 6 to AFCB as they were the only ones willing to pay him back for his previous mis-management of the club.

2) Jeff Mostyn was a director of Sport 6 until the end of October. He was still attending away matches sampling the pre match hospitality as only given to AFCB directors and guests nearly all last season.

3) Jeff Mostyn was replaced on the board in early November by Adam Murry who has been nearly a constant director since that time.

So either Mostyn or Murry were present during the tenure of Sport 6 as directors.

Sport 6 were responsible for a lot of our current problems but as they were directors a portion of that blame can be laid at Murry and Mostyn as they obviouisly didn't carry out their duties as directors of AFCB. Savi and Baker may have run our club into the ground but as directors Mostyn and Murry should have made themselves aware of what was going on.

Also Jeff left debts when he left the club which had to be paid by Sport 6,£154,000 in unpaid salaries. Now he is complaining about a similar amount. Some may think this is just karma.

Sorry to hear about Bobby Robson, great guy and a great manager.Saw him at the charity match at the weekend and he was hardly recognisable after his battle with cancer but he was still smiling.

Football legend.

Who brought Sport 6 on board in the first place heralding them as great for the club. Yep Mostyn the golden share grabber conveniently forgets his part in this mess.

Eddie Mitchell knew the score about the debts so why the whining now? Maybe an excuse in hand for when it all goes down the pan.

Two days running the Echo reporters have put their thoughts in print but why haven`t they addressed the board with their misgivings.
I can`t agree that we are starting on a level playing field,points-wise maybe, but not in other departments. Also where does the squad size of 18 come from, according to AFCB website there are 21.
One thing that does perturb me is the FL`s refusal to confirm or deny the embargo. The FL are known for their reluctance to comment, but this seems to be out of proportion.Could this be an attempt to hope things might go away?Maybe some more digging could prove intersting.

EM is no mug and would have been well aware of the financial situation before committing to AFCB. Given that his own business is far from booming he is very unlikely pi*s any of his own money down the well-oiled AFCB drain without a sound business plan - otherwise his missus would kick him out. No doubt he has a cunning plan (i.e. planning application)and it will of course take time to cut a deal with Structadene

Hampshire Dorset says...
3:12pm Fri 31 Jul 09

Maybe EM didn't know how deep the mess is? All speculation but given Murry and Mostyn had been banging on for months to get a deal - and EM had looked then walked away - what was it that triggered Baker to change his mind from a fully funded alternative that would have cleared all the debts (Mattheson) to go with Murry. The only condition someone told me Matheson had imposed was paying old wages as a loan not a gift - but did the club ever get the same deal from Mostyn/Murry etc? at the moment we are probably surviving on season ticket money.

I am still not convinced by the Matheson stories, if he was really that intersted in getting hold of the club how come we have not heard a peep out of him since Mitchell took over?? I would have thought he would still be interested at the very least, mainly because he would deal with the real owners and it would give him more time to do all that he wanted to. For those reasons and the fact we have seen nothing in the press or even a rumour I still think it was nothing more than the hot air we have seen from so many others during these take overs.

If he is/they are, it needs a willing seller and that perhaps is where the problem lays
