CHERRIES: WARREN TAKES A PAY CUT

WARREN Cummings has demonstrated his loyalty to Cherries by taking what he described as a “sizeable” drop in wages to remain at Dean Court.

The long-serving left-back yesterday became the last of Cher-ries’ out-of-contract players to agree fresh terms with the club as he signed a new one-year deal.

Cummings, 28, also revealed that he had the opportunity to move on to other clubs.

But he decided to stay in Dorset and will now look to build on his 200-plus Cherries appearances.

He told the Echo: “I’m happy to re-sign.

“I’ve taken a sizeable pay cut to stay and that was even with having offers on the table to go elsewhere and make more money.

“I think we can do something here and I want to be part of it.

“There were opportunities to go elsewhere but I decided that I’ve still got an ambition to do well at Bournemouth.

“I felt as though, at the end of last season, with what was achieved with the group of players that are here now, that something good could be achieved with the same hard work and a little bit of luck.

“It’s something I want to be part of.”

Cummings, who made 38 appearances last term, added: “My personal goal would be to play every week and, when I do play, have a big impact on the match, whichever match that may be.

“Then there’s the bigger goal which is the team goal and that’s to achieve the highest position in the league as possible.”

The news comes as a major boost to boss Eddie Howe, who has now managed to keep hold of the club’s out-of-contract sextet.

Ryan Pryce, Ryan Garry, Joe Partington, Josh McQuoid and Jeff Goulding agreed new deals – in principle – last month.

Meanwhile, Cummings’s dad and agent, Tom, yesterday defended his son on an internet fans’ forum.

Replying to a poster who had made inflammatory remarks about the Cherries star on the vital football website, Tom Cummings labelled the comments “an absolute disgrace towards a player who has been with the club for coming on seven seasons”.

I've said time and time again that Warren, when fit and focussed is one of the best left backs around so this is a cracking signing. I also feel last year would have given him a big kick. First wanting to leave and nobody coming in for him, then the supporters turning on him for the first time because of his attraction to Bournemouth's nightlife, then Wiggins proving that other left backs can come in and do a really good job and take his place. Good to see he's committed now and hopefully if he can stay fit and clear of injuries then he may just have saved us some money in the transfer market looking for a new left back

Good news about Warren signing. With ref. to Tom on UTC forum - I wouldn't call them inflammatory remarks, they were the opinion of a fan disenchanted with his apparent reticence to sign a contract and the transfer request that Warren put in at the beginning of last season.

By accepting 'a sizeable drop in wages' he has proved the perception that he is money grabbing to be wrong!

Warren is still only 28.If fully fit he should be one of the best attacking full backs in division 2.

That's good news, once Eddie got him fit last Season he looked his old self once again the best left back in the lower Divisions and makes the Squad a little stronger. The life of a Professional Sportsman is a short one ( in playing terms) and to turn down higher wages elsewhere is a remarkable gesture. Good for him.

Whilst we need all the players we can get,Let's not forget that Warren would have been long gone had anyone else been interested a couple of years ago!Also if he had lots of offers, would he really take a pay cut to stay here given the past? don't think so.If what he has said is true then fair play to the guy but I am sceptical! As for the comments on the forum, If it is o.k for Warren to put his comments in the paper then the fans have the right to reply by their means i.e the forums.Not sure what was said but if it was just something that his Dad didn't like rather than swear words or whatever then tough! A footballer gets a good life and is very priveledged and a paying fan should have the right to say what he wants as long as it is said in a respectful manner.All that said, Warren hope your heart is truly in it and I hope you have a great season.

So the squad is coming together, that's another defender who we know can be one of the best signed up for the season ahead, I wonder do the same posters who said we would be bottom six still feel the same after this news??
I look forward to seeing who else joins I would think there are players out there who need a job and no one is paying big money in the lower leagues as there isn't any, should be interesting.

Hello,

Inflammatory poster here. Just like to congratulate the Echo on another stellar piece of journalism. I apologise to Warren and his Father if they took my comments the wrong way. It was meant to be tongue in cheek but it seemed to provoke WW 3 (Wally War 3). Like others have mentioned, football is a game of opinions and granted, I could have worded mine more subtly than I did, but I don't think anyone would have predicted the fall out. Echo, you could at least have read all the other posts that actually kind of agreed with all or some of what I said. If my opinion (worded badly)is a disgrace, then so is the opinion of quite a few fans out there. I wish Warren well for the new season and now very much regret calling him money grabbing having read this article. My humble pie portion is large and I intend to finish it. Once again, thanks and good luck Warren!!

Thanks for putting us in the picture!

Can't really see why the echo even mentioned it if i'm honest! Space to fill I suppose rather than finding out anything that we may want to know!

With respect, my comment was that if the money was not available to bring in 2/3 players, then it was unbalanced, too small to do other than struggle when injuries and suspensions cut in ( this taking into account the vulnerable players we have). One down and two to go!!

Whilst I do not wish to minimise Warren's honourable decision, we should remember that many up and down the country who pay to watch football are also taking pay cuts in order to stay in employment however I admire his loyalty to the club good luck to him and I wish him an injury free season.

in reply to the comment that footballers gets a good life and is priveledged, i think is the biggest misconception possible. we are not talking premiership players here!! there wages will not be any better than the average man, and there career is alot shorter. warren has made some mistakes along the way but is still with us, and is still one of the best players in our league. lets get behind all players now and stop these stupid comments. up the cherries!!!

So to play football full time is not a priviledge??
On the pay front, no they are not premier but trust me they do o.k. and finally while I am glad he is still with the club, he certainly wouldn't have been save the fact that no-one else wanted him last time!

With respect, I was not singling you out, I was only asking a few who thought relegation was likely, if this changed their minds? I still feel with the players we have even now that we are much better than a bottom six side but you are more than entitled to feel differently.

I'm just happy that the Club has managed to re-sign all of the out of contract players, another cause for optimism before the season ahead. It's another testament to the belief the lads have in Eddie, Jason and Joe. I'm sure Warren will prove once again this season that his getting into the League One team of the year a few seasons back wasn't a fluke - big kudos for taking a pay cut!

Excellent news.Warren has been a fine servant for this club over the years.Apart from the start of last season when his fitness wasnt up to scratch he has been a model of consistency and at times last season showed he still has that flair that will contribute to what i believe will be a successfull season.COOOOOOOM OOOOON.
