CHERRIES’ miserable recent record in FA Cup replays continued as they suffered a chastening 3-0 defeat at the hands of League One leaders Wigan.

Goals from Sam Morsy, Dan Burn and Callum Elder earned the Latics a fourth-round tie against West Ham at the DW Stadium a week on Saturday.

Victory for the hosts condemned Cherries to a fourth successive replay defeat in the competition, their last win in a rematch coming in November 2007 against non-league Barrow.

Morsy’s opportunist ninth-minute strike separated the teams at the break with goals from Burn and Elder in the space of three second-half minutes seeing the 2013 cup winners win through.

Cherries will be kicking themselves having squandered a series of presentable chances with the score at 1-0 – with Benik Afobe the chief culprit.

Steve Cook, Charlie Daniels and Ryan Fraser kept their places in the Cherries starting line-up as boss Eddie Howe made no fewer than eight changes following Sunday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal.

Cook, Fraser, Afobe, Artur Boruc, Andrew Surman, Connor Mahoney and Lys Mousset all started, having featured in the 2-2 draw with the Latics at Vitality Stadium on January 6.

They were joined by Daniels, Marc Pugh, Harry Arter and Jack Simpson, while several under-21 players were named among the Cherries substitutes.

Emerson Hyndman, wrongly credited with an own goal in the first game, was also on the bench, as was Jordon Ibe who played a pivotal role in Cherries clawing back a 2-0 deficit to set up the replay.

Arter looked to fashion an opening after being gifted possession by Alex Bruce in the early stages, only to see his pass, which had been intended for Mousset, cleared for a corner.

Gavin Massey tried his luck from range, his 30-yarder comfortably gathered by Boruc, before Will Grigg required a lengthy spell of treatment following a coming-together with Surman.

However, the Cherries goalkeeper was powerless to prevent the Latics taking the lead after just nine minutes when Morsy pounced on the loose ball to fire the hosts ahead.

The midfielder picked his spot in the bottom corner from around 10 yards after Boruc had saved smartly from Grigg’s flicked effort, only for the rebound to fall invitingly at the feet of Morsy.

Skipper Morsy’s third goal of the season owed much to the persistence of winger Ryan Colclough, who stuck to his task to provide the cross for Grigg’s initial chance.

As Cherries went in search of a quick response, Fraser lifted his free-kick from 25 yards over the crossbar after Mousset had been fouled.

David Perkins received a deserved yellow card for unceremoniously upending Fraser and was soon followed into referee Stuart Attwell’s notebook by Colclough, the Scotsman again the victim.

Fraser burst into the Wigan 18-yard box, only to see his shot charged down before Afobe’s weak header was saved easily by Latics goalkeeper Jamie Jones.

Bruce felt the full force of a Mousset piledriver before Cherries’ appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears after Pugh had gone to ground challenging at the far post for Mahoney’s corner.

Arter’s robust tackle on Colclough prompted an angry reaction from Latics players, the midfielder becoming the third player to be booked by referee Attwell.

Mousset opted to try to round Callum Elder rather than shoot and was left to rue his decision as his flick hit the Latics defender and the chance went begging.

And on the stroke of half-time, Afobe’s glancing header from a Mahoney cross was clutched by Wigan goalkeeper Jones.

Fraser was denied by Jones at the start of the second half, the goalkeeper diving at his near post to turn away the Scotsman’s snapshot after Mahoney’s surging run had created the chance.

Grigg made way for Noel Hunt after 50 minutes before Gary Roberts’s thunderous drive from 25 yards sailed well wide.

Afobe stumbled as he prepared to pull the trigger having been put through by Mousset’s inch-perfect pass which split the hosts' defence.

Wigan went close to doubling their lead when Colclough’s shot from a tight angle flashed narrowly past the base of the post after 60 minutes.

Afobe’s scissors kick from a Fraser cross was way off target, while Mousset’s header from the lively Scotsman’s centre lacked power and direction.

Cherries had a glorious opportunity to level when Afobe was put through by Ibe, only for the striker to fail to hit the target when well placed.

The visitors were made to pay for their profligacy when Wigan added a second through substitute Burn, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes.

Towering defender Burn prodded home from close range following a centre from the right by Power, the ball bouncing over the line off the underside of the crossbar.

And Cherries’ problems worsened just three minutes later when Elder planted a header into the far corner to make it 3-0.
