CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe presided over one of the most memorable results in the club’s history and then praised his players for their powers of recovery.

Second-half goals from Callum Wilson and Jordon Ibe cancelled out Hector Bellerin’s opener as Cherries registered a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Vitality Stadium today.

Spain international Bellerin had given the visitors a 52nd-minute lead before Wilson and Ibe netted within four minutes of each other to cap a famous triumph.

It was the first time in seven attempts Cherries had lowered the Gunners’ colours – the North London giants having won no fewer than 13 top-flight titles, including three Premier League crowns.

The win extended to five games Cherries’ unbeaten run in league and FA Cup with Howe’s charges having come from behind in four of those matches.

Victory also propelled Cherries four places in the table to 13th with four points now separating them from the drop zone.

Howe said: “We had to do it the hard way. It is never easy against any team in the Premier League to come back from a losing position, let alone against the top clubs.

“It is a great sign for us and I think we have built confidence from doing it in recent weeks. It gives you a feeling that you are never out of a game and you always have a chance to come back. To come back and win was another boost for us so I was really pleased.

“I thought our fitness levels were very good. The statistics show we are one of the fittest teams in the Premier League and I thought that bore fruit.

“We were very energetic in our performance and the substitutes made an impact and a difference.

“We played the same system throughout the game but the changes just seemed to make us look more effective from an attacking sense. It was great to see that and the strength of the squad showing.

“It is very important that we keep in this moment and keep the momentum we have built.

“We need to continue to produce the performances that we have recently because I think we have been very good in the past five games.

“I have been very pleased with the response from the players. They have responded very well to what was a difficult moment.”

Although Arsenal were without a couple of key players, including striker Alexis Sanchez who has been linked with both Manchester City and Manchester United, Howe said nothing would take the gloss off Cherries’ win.

Asked whether his team had taken confidence from seeing the Gunners line-up, Howe replied: “No, I don’t think so. I think that would be disrespectful to the players that Arsenal played.

“When you look at their frontline, there was no feeling from us that it was weaker. They have some outstanding players and we knew that the only way we were going to win was by playing very well so I don’t think it matters who they played, our players respect all of theirs.”
