CHERRIES edged into the Hampshire Senior Cup quarter-finals after sinking Farnborough on penalties at Cherrywood Road.

Nic Ciardini gave the hosts the lead 11 minutes in but Cherries striker Mikael Ndjoli soon grabbed an equaliser from the spot.

Jaidon Anthony followed up his FA Youth Cup goal against Hull City last week with a second-half effort which had the visitors in front.

Three minutes later, Jack Barton levelled matters but Cherries prevailed 3-1 in the shootout.

Boss Carl Fletcher told the club website: “I’m pleased with the evening. We had a really young side out and they were up against a strong men’s side in Farnborough and that meant they had to deal with what was thrown at them.

“The pitch was boggy and difficult, which only added to the challenge and rain fell throughout the evening. We showed a good work rate and our quality of passing was good and our lads kept going to the end.”

The quarter-final draw is due to take place on Saturday.

Aside from Cherries, the teams left in the competition are Havant & Waterlooville, Eastleigh, Winchester City, AFC Portchester, Blackfield & Langley, Hamble Club and Alresford Town.
