HARRY Arter admitted he had to get Ireland’s painful World Cup exit “out of my head” in a bid to keep performing for Cherries.

Arter impressed when he netted during Cherries' 4-0 win over Huddersfield at Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

His performance came four days after Arter’s hopes of featuring in his first major tournament had been dashed when the Republic were thumped 5-1 by play-off rivals Denmark following a first-leg stalemate.

Arter, who was substituted at half-time during the second leg in Dublin, admitted Ireland’s departure from the competition had been a bitter pill to swallow.

But having bounced back with a positive display for Cherries, the midfield ace was eager not to dwell on the past.

He told the Daily Echo: “When a low happens, like missing out on the World Cup, I can’t really describe it because it’s the first time it has happened to me.

“I wouldn’t say it was devastation but it was disappointing because we went so far as a group in that campaign.

“As a group, we expected so much more from ourselves.

“I have to get that out of my head and concentrate on trying to perform here now, personally and then collectively.

“You have to try to stay as level headed as you can and try to forget it, as hard as it has been and probably will be going forward.”

Injury cruelly prevented the midfielder the opportunity to represent his adopted country at Euro 2016, having made his international debut against England a year previously.

While he missed out on another chance to star on the global stage, Arter insisted his club exploits with Cherries would continue to be his driving force.

“I have always said in football, especially with players of my sort in a certain way, you always experience more lows than you do highs,” he added.

“The only way you can put it right in your head is playing your next game.

“To come back to club football, get a goal and get a win was something I wanted to try to do – thankfully it came off.

“If I had qualified for the World Cup and we had lost on Saturday and I had a poor performance, I would be feeling as low as ever.”

Arter is expected to be involved for Eddie Howe’s men when they make the trip to Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday.
