CHERRIES star Ryan Fraser delivered a honest self-assessment and admitted he had not met the high standards he set himself this season.

The 23-year-old winger has endured a frustrating start to the campaign as Cherries have won just once during their opening five Premier League games.

Fraser has made four league appearances, featuring for 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat at West Brom before playing 78 minutes in Cherries' 2-0 reverse at the hands of Watford.

The Scotland international was an unused substitute against Manchester City before an ankle problem forced him off in the first half at Arsenal.

Fraser shook off the injury to take his place in the starting line-up as Cherries registered their first top-flight victory against Brighton before being replaced by Jordon Ibe.

However, despite a goal against Birmingham City in the second round of the Carabao Cup in August, Fraser revealed he had been lacking in confidence during the opening stages of the campaign.

He told the Daily Echo: “I have been disappointed so far. My confidence is a little down.

“As a footballer, when your confidence is down, there is nothing worse. Little things don’t come off and it goes against you.

“I don’t need other people telling me how I am playing. I haven’t been doing great and I haven’t been doing badly but, I think for where I want to be, I want to be much higher personally.

“I was speaking to the gaffer and he knows it as well. I have no doubts in my ability, it’s just when you are low on confidence, nothing works for you.

“I think it needs just one little assist or a goal and everything changes. Until then, I will keep working hard and keep going.”

While Fraser said he had been disappointed by his individual form, he also admitted he was his own biggest critic.

“I am the first one to criticise myself,” he added.

“I came into this season and wanted to be one of the best wingers in the league.

“I haven’t been great, I am the first to say that, so I just need to keep going.

“I am not going to sit and cry about it. I am out on the training pitch trying to work hard.

“I think I am the type of person who likes to criticise myself more than anyone. I know how good I can be. When I am not doing it, I am the first one to say I haven’t been good enough.”

Fraser was deployed at right-back during Cherries’ extra-time 1-0 Carabao Cup third round victory over Brighton on Tuesday.

He will be looking to keep his place in Eddie Howe’s starting line-up when Cherries face Everton in the Premier League tomorrow (3pm).
