BOSS Eddie Howe insisted Cherries midfielder Junior Stanislas was “closer” to making his return from injury.

The former Burnley man has recovered from a long-standing groin problem and recently returned to training with the first-team squad.

Speaking at this morning’s press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup third round tie against Brighton at Vitality Stadium tomorrow (7.45pm), Howe said: “Junior is closer.

“He has been training with us only for a small window but has looked very good.

“I have been very pleased with how he has returned.

“He has looked after himself during his injury and he looks fit, so we will wait and see.”

The Cherries boss also gave an update on defender Steve Cook, who missed the 2-1 Premier League victory over the Seagulls on Friday with a knee problem.

Asked about the centre-half, Howe replied: “We just need to assess how he is.

“I don’t think it’s a serious problem but, whether he makes this game or not, we will wait and see.”
