BOSS Eddie Howe confirmed summer signing Jermain Defoe would be handed his first start for Cherries in the Carabao Cup.
Striker Defoe will line up against Championship outfit Birmingham City in Tuesday’s second round clash at St Andrew’s.
The tie will see Defoe come face to face with his mentor and former manager Harry Redknapp who is now in charge at the Midlands club.
A League Cup winner with Tottenham in 2008, Defoe has come off the bench in Cherries’ first two Premier League games of the season.
Asked whether leaving Defoe on the bench against Watford on Saturday had been a big decision, Howe said: “No, not really.
“We just don’t think he is where he needs to be fitness-wise. He needs some more work and will get an opportunity on Tuesday.
“I think starting a game is always a good indicator so we will have a look. It was difficult to get him into the game against Watford so, hopefully, it will be different on Tuesday.”
