CHERRIES frontman Jordon Ibe delivered a brutally honest self-appraisal of his first season at Vitality Stadium and admitted it was time to “buck up my ideas”.

Ibe has been one of Cherries’ star performers during pre-season and netted in wins over Portuguese outfit Estoril and the only goal at QPR.

The 21-year-old Londoner joined Cherries from Liverpool for a reported fee of £15million in July 2016 and much had been expected of the club’s marquee signing.

But after being selected for the first 11 games in the Premier League – and being substituted in all of them – Ibe was restricted to a peripheral role.

He started only two further matches – against Manchester City in February and at Liverpool in April – and appeared 12 times from the bench. Ibe also had to make do with just 41 minutes of action across the final four games of the season.

Ibe, who again caught the eye during Cherries’ 2-2 draw with Italian giants Napoli on Sunday, will be hoping to feature in the Premier League opener at West Brom on Saturday.

Asked by the Daily Echo for an assessment of his first 12 months at the club, Ibe pulled no punches when he replied: “Very poor.

“Hopefully, this season can be 10 times better because I have a lot to prove to this football club.

Eddie Howe put a lot of trust in bringing me here for the price tag for such a young age so, hopefully, I can do well and help the team.

“I didn’t even score a goal in my first season here so it is time for me to buck up my ideas and become a man. I want to help the team and add some assists and goals.”

Asked why he felt his first season had been so poor, Ibe replied: “I don’t know if it was my age or maybe my head wasn’t in the right place.

“I haven’t really got an answer to that. I just know it wasn’t as good as it should have been and I have a lot to prove.”

Although boss Howe insisted the reported fee for Ibe had been “vastly inflated by the media”, the player refused to use it as an excuse and said it had not weighed heavily on him.

Asked whether he felt he had improved in his first season at the club, Ibe replied: “We will have to see come the start of the Premier League.

“I feel like I have had a better pre-season and it was a full one as well. It has been a long settling-in period but, hopefully, I can do well.

“I am still young and still have a lot to learn. The senior players here, people like Charlie Daniels and the rest, are helping me, as are the coaching staff.

“Pre-season has gone well and we have done well, especially with the results. We only lost one game so have been delighted with the results. I am just trying to build as a footballer and get to where I think I should be.”
