CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe has hailed the exploits of Aaron Ramsdale and hopes the young goalkeeper can complete a famous double for the club.

Ramsdale has played a leading role in helping England reach the final of the European Under-19 Championship in Georgia.

And the 19-year-old stopper is again expected to feature when the Young Lions lock horns with Portugal in today’s final in Gori.

It is the fourth final reached by England’s men’s development teams this summer – with Cherries midfielder Lewis Cook having captained them to Under-20 World Cup glory last month.

England also won the Toulon Tournament in June and reached the final of the European Under-17 tournament in May.

Ramsdale, who joined Cherries in an £800,000 move from Sheffield United in January, has conceded just once in four games in the championship.

His latest shut-out came on Wednesday when Lukas Nmecha’s injury-time goal earned them a 1-0 win, sending England into the final at the expense of Czech Republic.

Ramsdale has taken to 11 his tally of caps for the under-19s, featuring in group wins over Bulgaria, Netherlands and Germany and the last-four encounter with Czech Republic.

Cherries boss Howe, capped twice by England at the Toulon Tournament in 1998, told the Daily Echo: “We have been really pleased for Aaron. It is great news for the long-term future of the club.

“It is a similar story to Lewis Cook in the respect that we have such high hopes for Aaron and really believe he could be an important player for us.

“With regard to his age, this tournament is the biggest stage he can perform on and he has performed outstandingly well.

“We have been tracking his progress and have been very pleased with what we have seen. It would be great if Aaron and England could emulate what Lewis did earlier in the summer.

“It is not often we have had players at development level representing England and doing so well.

“The signs are great for the future because we have such a talented young group of players coming through at our club.”
