HARRY Arter hopes Cherries sign John Terry and has "no doubt" the club would "love to" bring the Chelsea superstar to Vitality Stadium.

Terry has announced his intention to continue playing after deciding to bring down the curtain on his decorated 19-year Stamford Bridge career at the end of this season.

The 36-year-old former England captain won't be short of suitors and his former Blues' team-mate Gus Poyet yesterday admitted he will try to tempt Terry to Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua, where the Uruguayan is manager.

Nevertheless, Cherries have featured high on every list of potential destinations for Terry and the prospect of luring the four-times Premier League winner to Dorset is one that excites Arter.

He said: "I think the way the way we have progressed, we are a club on the up. We are looking to improve every year and the only way we will do that is by getting good players in.

"If John is interested in coming here then I have no doubt the club would love to bring him in.

"I am sure he will have plenty of people interested in him but if it is something both parties want to do then, hopefully, it will happen."

Boss Eddie Howe has recent form for persuading a high-profile England footballer to link up with Cherries after Jack Wilshere made 27 Premier League appearances for the club during a loan stay from Arsenal.

Wilshere's season was ended prematurely by injury – but not before he had helped Howe's side break the back of their survival mission for another campaign.

"We are reluctant to say we have done enough, because you can end up going down and looking silly," said Arter, with Cherries on 38 points – seven clear of the bottom three.

"We performed really well against Middlesbrough last weekend, the pressure was on us to get a result and now we are looking up the table, rather than behind us.

"It comes from the players. The manager deserves a lot of credit but the lads work so hard. We respond and listen to what he wants us to do.

"Even though we had a couple of poor results – albeit they were against Chelsea and Tottenham – we still had so much confidence in each other and in what we do here."

While reported target Terry is at the tail end of his career, Lewis Cook is just starting out.

The 20-year-old, bought from Leeds for £7million last summer, continued his steady reintroduction into the side with an energetic display against Middlesbrough after replacing Dan Gosling shortly before half-time.

And Arter agrees his fellow midfielder looks as though he has been around for years.

"He does and that is a massive credit to him," said Arter. "Lewis is only a young boy, although he had a big price tag on him.

"He’s settled in so well. He gave a great account of himself at Tottenham, then against Boro he showed how good he is on the ball."
