CHERRIES have been linked with a summer swoop for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan at Aston Villa whose boss Steve Bruce is apparently keen to complete a £3million permanent deal.

However, The Sun claims Cherries are one of three Premier League clubs also tracking Johnstone, the other two being Everton and Sunderland.

Johnstone joined Villa in January and has made 13 appearances in the Championship, keeping five clean sheets in his past six games.

A product of Manchester United’s much-vaunted academy, Preston-born Johnstone is behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero in the Old Trafford pecking order.

He is yet to feature for United’s first team and Villa are the sixth club he has served on loan, having previously had spells at Scunthorpe, Walsall, Yeovil, Doncaster and Preston North End.

Johnstone lined up for Doncaster when they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Cherries at Dean Court in March 2014.

Yann Kermorgant, who yesterday revealed he planned to retire at the end of next season, bagged a hat-trick and Harry Arter netted twice in Cherries’ first season in the Championship.
