CALLUM Wilson says a centre forward's responsibility to his team goes beyond scoring goals.

Cherries legend Ted MacDougall this week talked of his longing to hear today's strikers class themselves simply as "goalscorers".

MacDougall, who netted a post-war club record 144 goals across two spells with Cherries, told the Daily Echo he would find it tough matching the work-rate Eddie Howe demands of his players.

MacDougall said: "I never hear anybody say they’re a goalscorer now. ‘I don’t worry about playing well, I’m a goalscorer’ – I never hear that. It’s about the team or assists."

As if to prove MacDougall's point, Wilson responded to scoring the fifth goal in Cherries' 6-1 drubbing of Hull by insisting the quality of his team's performance was of far greater importance than his own scoring return.

Asked if there was room for an old-fashioned penalty box poacher in the modern game and whether he would hold on to his spot in Howe's side without adding good honest toil, Wilson told the Daily Echo: "It’s about your all-round performance.

"That’s what will keep you in the team. Our style of play is hard work to execute and you get your goals off the back of working hard. That showed against Hull. My goal came late but, thankfully, it happened."

The 24-year-old admits he would like the opportunity to bolster his tally from the penalty spot.

But after watching Junior Stanislas fire home from 12 yards against Hull, Wilson will not be trying to persuade Cherries boss Howe to put him on regular spot-kick duties.

He said: "Naturally, it’s forward players who take penalties. There’s quite a few good penalty-takers in the team, so you’re confident that whoever takes them will score. It’s not something we focus on too much."

Wilson says the battery of pacy, direct, industrious attackers at Howe's disposal fills him with confidence for Cherries' future prospects.

Joshua King is staking his claim for a return to the team. The Norwegian scored 53 seconds after coming on as a substitute at Watford and, following his second-half introduction against Hull, he delivered the sumptuous cross that Wilson headed home.

"He’s like a super-sub at the moment," said Wilson. "He was a bit annoyed I didn’t celebrate my goal with him to be honest. But it was a great ball and he’s knocking on the door for a starting place in the team. With the likes of Junior playing so well it’s hard for him, but he just has to bide his time."
