POLICE have issued a stark warning to Bournemouth fans as they prepare for today’s match against Portsmouth.

Specially-trained officers are descending on Fratton Park for the club's FA Cup fourth round match against the Cherries.

There will be a strong police presence before, during and after the game, following a number of incidents recently involving Pompey fans.

Hampshire police have warned supporters that anyone who commits an offence could be banned from future matches.

Supt and police commander Andy Houghton said: “Hampshire Constabulary is working closely with Portsmouth Football Club and is our intention to prevent crime and disorder and to promote a trouble-free event.

“Those who are intent on committing offences are likely to be arrested and face lengthy banning orders that prohibit them from attending future matches.

"The vast majority of supporters attend football to enjoy the game and do so peacefully.

"People should be able to bring their children and family members to the matches without worry."

Officers will be working with Portsmouth, the British Transport Police and the city council to minimise congestion and disruption as nearly 19,000 people travel to and from the game which kicks off at 3pm.
