CHERRIES manager Eddie Howe has been running the rule over Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz Te.

The 29-year-old frontman joined Howe’s squad in training last week as he looks to stake his claim for a contract.

Vaz Te is currently a free agent after leaving Turkish Super Lig side Akhisar Belediyespor in the summer.

He made five appearances for West Ham last season with his final game for the Hammers coming in a 2-1 defeat at Everton in the Premier League in November.

Vaz Te’s three-year spell at Upton Park came to an end in January when his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

The former Bolton and Barnsley striker netted the winning goal for West Ham in their 2012 play-off final against Blackpool that ensured the club’s return to the top flight.

Vaz Te has also been linked with Sunderland, who are now managed by Sam Allardyce, his former boss at West Ham, and he recently had a trial at West Bromwich Albion.

Howe is due to monitor him further this week before deciding whether to take his interest further. Although Vaz Te could sign for Cherries, he would not be eligible to feature in the Premier League until January. The club then re-declares its 25-man squad after the closing of the transfer window.
