LUTHER Blissett has urged England manager Roy Hodgson to keep tabs on injured Cherries hotshot Callum Wilson and insisted: “He is definitely worth a shot.”

Hodgson admitted Wilson had been “on the radar” for a senior call-up prior to rupturing anterior cruciate ligaments in his knee at Stoke City 10 days ago, an injury the Three Lions boss described as “tragic”.

Wilson, who had netted five goals in six Premier League matches before his curtailed appearance at the Britannia Stadium, will be sidelined for around six months, postponing any chance of becoming the first player to claim a senior England cap while representing Cherries.

But Blissett, capped 14 times by England prior to netting 56 goals in 121 league appearances for Cherries between 1988 and 1990, is adamant Wilson’s time will come.

Blissett told the Daily Echo: “He definitely would have been considered when you look at the way he started. He picked up from where he left off last season and maybe seemed set for place in one of the squads later on this season.

“The only thing you can do is cross your fingers that he gets over this injury. He needs to get back into training and playing when the time is right and rediscover that form he was in. If he does that, the opportunity will come again.

“If the England manager had Callum on his radar, he will be keeping an eye on him when he does come back.

"Hopefully, he can find his feet quickly and get an opportunity to show what he can do.”

The ex-Watford and AC Milan poacher, who debuted in a friendly against West Germany in 1982 before netting a hat-trick in a 9-0 European Championship qualifier against Luxembourg, also admitted he has been monitoring Wilson’s Cherries career and was happy to provide a ringing endorsement of his international credentials.

“He is quick, good with the ball into his feet and can also run in behind people,” added Blissett. “He is brave and, most importantly, knows where the back of the net is.

“He is always very happy to keep running and chasing things and if he gets the chance to go one-against-one with somebody, he will take it and go. They are great traits to have as a striker because all you ever want to do is score goals.

“Every opportunity that comes, whether you trace it yourself or somebody gives you a half chance, you’re always looking for that.

“I have watched Callum’s game and with the way he has come on throughout last season and again this season, I think he is definitely worth a shot.”
