STEPHEN Purches says he would be “very surprised” if James Hayter’s record-breaking hat-trick feat were ever to be matched or beaten.

Today marks the 11th anniversary of Hayter netting three times in 140 seconds during Cherries’ 6-0 win over Wrexham at Dean Court.

The striker, one of only three players in the Cherries squad still playing in the Football League, had come off the bench as an 84th-minute substitute.

His heroics came after goals from Purches – now Cherries’ development squad coach – Warren Cummings and Warren Feeney had put Sean O’Driscoll’s men 3-0 up.

Purches told the Daily Echo: “I don’t remember too much about the first 85 minutes other than the fact we had played quite well. Then, all of a sudden, something like that happened!

“It was a great achievement and every time he touched the ball, he scored. If anyone had said it was going to happen, you wouldn’t have believed them.

“After witnessing it, I would be very surprised to ever see something like that happen again. I think it was a one-off and it was great to have been involved when it happened.”
