HARRY Cornick fired Cherries’ development side to a 4-1 win over AFC Wimbledon before earning praise from boss Stephen Purches.

The 19-year-old, who made his first-team debut in the 5-1 FA Cup victory over Rotherham on January 3, hit a double as he led the line in this afternoon's triumph at Fawcett’s Field.

Further goals from Ben Whitfield and substitute Josh O’Hanlon ensured an emphatic win and sent Cherries second in the Final Third Development League South Division.

Cornick’s display impressed Purches, who told the Daily Echo: “Harry played as more of a centre-forward and he did some good things in a role he hasn’t had loads of experience in.

“At certain stages he has played in that position before and against Wimbledon the team picked itself, which enabled him to play there again.

“He was a willing runner in behind and was clinical when he got his opportunities. He worked very hard for the team and the goals he scored were decent goals.”

Defenders Elliott Ward and Miles Addison played the full 90 minutes, while Mohamed Coulibaly featured in the first half.

Whitfield put Cherries in front with a clinical side-footed finish after he had latched on to Josh Carmichael’s measured through ball.

A classy lob from Cornick increased the lead before Cherries keeper Jordan Holmes kept out Dan Agyei’s drive.

Following the resumption, Cornick blasted home from a narrow angle to double his personal tally.

Agyei pulled one back but O’Hanlon rounded off an emphatic victory from close range.

Purches added: “It was about trying to take the conditions out of it and some of the play was good on a playing surface that was not the best.”
