MANAGER Eddie Howe dedicated to the club’s supporters Cherries’ latest entry into the Dean Court record books.

Victory over Rotherham on Saturday saw Cherries win on the road for the eighth time this season – a club best in five campaigns in the second flight.

Goals from Tommy Elphick and Callum Wilson at the New York Stadium saw Howe’s team pass last season’s tally of seven, with 10 away games remaining.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “It is a really nice record to have because to win away in the Championship is incredibly difficult.

“I am most pleased for our supporters because they have to come a long way to support the team and their efforts have been rewarded with some great victories this season. We’ve got a lot of important away games to come and, hopefully, there will be a few more to follow.”

Elphick headed home his first goal since April to give Cherries the lead on the stroke of half-time before Wilson took his tally for the season to 14 with a close-range finish in the second half.

Howe added: “It was always going to be a tough game. It was snowing and raining and Rotherham had brought in several new players on loan who would have been keen to impress.

“It was a scrappy start to the game and I thought it took us about half-an-hour to really get control and dominate possession. Once we did that, I thought we looked threatening on goal and looked like we could open them up. The goals came at good times for us.

“We have been good defensively on the road and were again solid. I thought we protected our goal very well and our goalkeeper, who has had to be patient, came in and did a very good job.

“We have always looked like we have had goals in us this season and, thankfully, that was the case again. I thought we were ruthless when our opportunities came along. Being tight defensively and free-scoring is a good combination.

“If there has been a criticism of us, it is can we come to places like this and be ugly? Can we defend in tough conditions against a direct side and how resolute are we going to be when it comes to set-plays and long throws?

“It was all in the mix and I thought we answered those questions quite emphatically. To be successful, you have to find different ways to win, not just when conditions are in your favour, and that was a good sign.”
